I'm not sure if this is your issue, but I've had to run NWN1 in Windows XP compatibility mode on Windows 7 for it to run well.  Might help with the installer as well?  As I remember, my install on windows 7 went fine, but the game itself wouldn't run without turning on compatibility mode.

Or, maybe your disc is damaged. '<img'>

Worse case scenario, though it costs a little: gog has the diamond edition for $10:

Just be warned that the GOG edition still requires that you download and install the full 1.69 critical rebuild.  I know they claim that they are patched to 1.69, but there are pieces missing from their installed version, so just install it, and download the 1.69 patch, once that is installed you will be good to go.

My oc disc's ALWAYS gave issues on disc 2, never could figure out why, bought a second copy, it did the same thing.  Eventually they both install, but I usually got frustrated with them multiple times.

Now-a-days, I just have a saved copy that I burned to cd, and just copy the entire folder structure over, it all works without install from that saved backup.  I think it requires that you re-enter the cd keys at some point, but I have them saved in a text file in the main folder as a copy of the cd-keys.txt file that nwn creates on it's own... meaning I have two copies of the same file just to be safe.
