Question about monks
« on: April 28, 2014, 08:38:53 pm »

Im rolling a monk (high lvl monk with a few fighter) the OC + HotU Ill probably go unarmed but Im wondering about going str or dex.

Str will obviously deal a lot more dmg then going dex but Im concerned about the loss of AC.

Now plz corect me if I am wrong but the bigger AC would mostly be beneficial agaiant hord of weakling as tough boss have insane BAB and will bypass my poor monk AC anyway making str build betther ?

Keep in mind that there is pretty uber gear to be had in the OC and especially in HotU. As a monk, by the end of HotU, you can have +7 robes, +5 boots, a +9 ring, and a +7 ammy. Add to that your +5 monk AC bonus and +5 from tumble and you are looking at an AC in the upper 40s with no WIS or DEX gear or buffs. With, say +6 to each DEX and WIS from items and potions, you would probably be in the mid 50s, which is really very respectable against most of the creatures in that module. Obviously, a dexer will likely be well into the 60s and getting into the range where (I am making an educated guess) even most bosses aren't hitting you often. But, even a STR build will be in decent shape. Maybe there are tougher bosses, but I don't recall even Meph's AB being that crazy. Lower 40s maybe? I don't recall if he is the toughest boss in terms of melee, but I would suspect that he is near the top, since outsiders have full AB progression and he is strong and has a wicked trident.

The thing to keep in mind for the Bioware campaigns is that they are designed to be very doable, even when a toon isn't designed for extreme AC or AB or damage or whatever. With an unarmed monk, things can be a little tricky in terms of a dexer dealing damage because he won't have the steroidal weapons Rizolvir can forge. (Unless I am misremembering and Rizolvir allows melee buffs to gloves, but I think that was a mod I made and not part of the BW version of the campaign.)

hmm the only time i ever played the OC was with a dex Paladin Monk Fighter with dual kamas. He did insane amounts of dmg and was immune to just about everything. Unarmed, MrZork makes a great point about the forge and it's possible lack of gloves for you to use. In which case I suggest getting paladin or cleric for bonus magic damage. In a low magic realm like the OC, Cleric is kinda overpowered. It's buffs are quite ridiculous given how simple the combat mechanics are in this game.

First of all, HotU was intended to be played with the hero from SoU, not the OC. Just last year, I played a DEX-based dual-kama Rogue 19 / Monk 11 / Fighter 10 in Sou, HotU, and the Sands of Fate series (to get all the way to level 40) with great success. I'd be happy to post the build for you.

For following up the OC, I recommend the Aribeth's Redemption series. It has plenty of combat to enjoy, but it is primarily a love story for the PC and Aribeth, so you would need to be male and of Good alignment. Neutral might work, but an Evil PC would definately not last long. You end up at about the same level as HotU, and it has a similar forge, so you could probably take this PC into Sands of Fate, too.

Ok so I've come with this build. The idea is to make an unarmed monk that can make a use of everything a monk as to offer (beside maybe the ki strike wich seems useless ). Since stunning fist and quivering palm benefit from wisdom I thought that I should make a high monk/cleric build.

I need to build to work great  in OC/SoU/HotUD but wanted to remain competitif if I ever take this monk into sentinel of fate where I'd have enough base wisdom for improved quivering palm and for lvl9 cleric spells (but I'm not sure that I'll ever go that high in cleric levels).

I went for a dex simply because improved quivering palm require 19dex/19wis leaving very few attribute left for str. But I'd like to hear your tought about it. Just plz remember that I'm trying to make an unarmed melee fighting monks. Would I have enough wisdom to make stunning fist and quivering palm usefull ?

Edit: Dam linking my build havent worked so I guess I'll just post the stats by lvl 27.

str14 / dex 19 / cons 10 / wis18 / int10 / cha10

monk 18 / cleric 9 (6lvl pre epic)

I'll try to make the link work tomorrow so you can see my feats and skills.

But I guess the core abilities are lvl18monk  lvl5 cleric spell, BAB 18 (unbuffed) , and +4 wisdom modifer to DC. My BAB seems low but my AC will probably sky rockect with all that +dec and + wis.

If you play the OC and then SoU, you will be way overpowered. It will be too easy and no fun. Like the OC, SoU is supposed to start at level 1. The OC and SoU happen at the same time to different heroes. If you insist on playing all 3 campaigns with the same character, try SoU then the OC and then HotU. Unlike SoU, the OC will attempt to adjust to your character's too-high level and equipment.

For build advice, the best place to go is The NWN Epic Character Builders Guild. You might find the build you want in The NWN Epic Character Search Engine.
