Roleplaying Drizzt
« on: February 16, 2014, 03:44:59 pm »

Hey guys, it's been years since I played NWN1 and I want to loosely roleplay the legendary Drizzt Do'Urden '<img'> This means I want to be a ranger with the benefits of a few rogue levels (and something extra when I reach HoTU).

I can't decide between starting as Ranger or Rogue though. I know the real Drizzt is a Fighter at start (in Homeland and Exile), but meh. So... if I start out as Ranger, people see me as a Ranger. If I start out as Rogue, well you get it, even if I add Ranger levels, I'm still Rogue first, and that bugs me.

I currently have a Rogue 2 / Ranger 1 Drizzt, started as Rogue, and have these skills:

- Dual-Wield
- Two Weapon Fighting
- Weapon Finesse
- Favored Enemy: Undead

I think I should restart and create a Ranger, then add a lvl of Rogue, then 5 more lvls of Ranger to unlock Animal Companion (Panther, Guenhwyvar) and add some more Rogue lvls afterwards.

What say you?

Well, I'm a Ranger 2 / Rogue 1 now and I gotta say the loot is crappy in the academy. Where the Rogue looted good boots and a good something extra, the Ranger loots two breastplates. Huzza. While I know this is only the start, the Rogueloot is quite the lifesaver in early game.

RESTART!

Lol.

You MIGHT want to consider installing the PRC - so you can play a real Drow (with all the racial bonuses).  You will need to use an outside .bic creator to do it, however (not a problem, but a bit of a work-around due to GUI limitations).

There is an injector included that automatically installs it to Mods that one selects, so it is no big hassle to do (especially for the OC).

I recommend the Pretty Good Character Creator & Customizer or like mod to develop the base design you wish to use, then import this character into the mod of choice.

The loot you get in the Academy is more or less irrelevant.  Not only that, but the way you're wanting to play is going to leave you with an experience penalty since your rogue and ranger levels will be more than one level apart.  My suggestion?  Just go pure ranger (could add in Shadowdancer levels if you really need a Tumble dump).

The main problem you're going to run into is that Scimitars do not benefit from Weapon Finesse while Rangers require Light Armor in order to Dual-Wield.  This means you get AB and damage from Strength but also need higher Dexterity since you can't wear medium or heavy armor.  These are contradictory, effectively.

But if you really want to be a Ranger (a Fighter/Rogue Drizzt could dual-wield in Full Plate) I'd recommend the following...

Elf
STR: 16
DEX: 18
CON: 8
INT: 10
WIS: 14
CHA: 8

All points go into Strength as you level

Skills will probably be Discipline, Hide, Move Silently, and Tumble.

01: Weapon Focus: Scimitar
03: Knockdown
06: Blind Fight
09: Improved Critical: Scimitar
12: Improved Knockdown
15: Toughness
18: Dodge

You primarily want to increase Strength with items and then Dexterity if there's no strength option (for example, Tomi's ring in the OC).  Having potions of both Bull's Strength and Cat's Grace will help.

Keep in mind the PRC introduces quite a few things that are overpowered which designers of modules don't expect.  For example, for the PRC's Drow, you're gaining 1 skill point per level, 3 Will save, and 50%+ immunity to all spells (in general) in exchange for -1 AB/saves/skills in "bright light."

Usually this sort of thing comes with an "effective character level" penalty, meaning you earn less XP since you're effectively a higher level character.  But I don't see anything about that on the PRC's page -- which simply leaves the Drow subrace as being overpowered.

In short, I'd suggest you avoid the PRC.

Naschrakh1983, if you need any help with the PRC or have any questions, feel free to PM me.  I will provide you with all the help and assistance you need, including setting switches should you so choose (so that you can play with the xp penalty if that is your choice).

Then you can play a real Drow, without in any way, shape, or form imbalancing anything.

Ignore the naysayers.

Except that, y'know, Drow are supposed to have a +2 ECL adjustment because they're so powerful.

Example 1.

Example 2.

Example 3.

Example 4.

Using the Drow subrace (which is MUCH more powerful than a standard Elf) without including the +2 ECL IS imbalancing.

Naschrakh1983, if you're concerned about Drizzt not being strong enough in NWN then you'll save yourself some time and energy by simply enabling DebugMode and boosting your stats with console commands -- it's just as legitimate.

But you'll get through the OC just fine with the build I linked, at least.

Here is a link to the Prc Switches

http://prc.athasrebo...pic,1589.0.html

In them, one can set (or reset, as the case may be) ECL.

If you, Naschrakh1983, wish to play with ECL, please PM me, should you decide to use the PRC.  I would also suggest that you take the Daylight Adaptation feat, so that you do not receive penalties when in daylight, since you will be playing Driz'zt (who has this feat, btw).

To enable the switches, you use the PRC radial, specifically the "alter code switches" section at the top, to turn on the racial hit dice option (this is ingame).  One always has access to the switches ingame, and you can turn them on and off as you see fit.

It is a pretty nifty solution, IMHO.

Thanks for all the help, guys, really appreciate it, but my Drizzt is simply an elf with black skin and white hair, and uses a rapier + short sword for weapons, hence the "loosely roleplay" in my first post '<img'>

I still recommend the PGC3 mod, as it will also allow you to supply and outfit your PC, so minor loot drops are not required.

The XP penalty MagicalMaster referred to can cost you levels in the game. You can loose out on quests because your lv is too low.
