Spear: 1-handed or 2-handed?
« on: January 18, 2014, 11:47:53 pm »

               Hi folks,
just grabbed Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark and decided to give it a try after enjoying NWN quite a bit.
I started with a Dwarf Cleric, probably getting a couple of Fighter levels along the way.

My question is very simple. While chasing kobolds in the Elven cript I found a spear.
I equipped it and to my surprise I could wield it while also keeping my shield in the off-hand.
I unequipped the shield to check if I could put it back with the spear already in my hand and no problem.
That's quite surprising as I expected the spear - being a large weapon - to be wielded 2-handed.
What am I missing?

Sounds like you've downloaded and installed some haks into your NwN install.

Curious, the only unofficial things I added are Tony K AI and the Alternate Combat Animations - as far as I remember. However I'm using v1.68 Italian version of the game, maybe there's a bug with that?

Are the other two-handed weapons now one-handed?  If so, try exporting your character and then running a script in a custom module to check your actual size.  There are ways through normal scripting that this phenomenon can occur (often through a mixture of appearance changes and polymorphs).  BioWare's horse system is purposefully non-compatible with polymorphs to prevent problems of badly mixed data such as this.

I haven't run into many other large weapons last time I played. Hard to say though since I haven't got that Fighter level yet and many weapons cannot be used with Simple weapon skill only.
Anyway thanks, I'll check later and see if I can understand what's going on.

Well, that could be a nice thing, if you look at the "300" movie, spartans fight with spear and shield.
Maybe you can try with a staff, should work two handed.

Ciao

I typically make this change in my own HAKs, and then create a long spear for commoners to use 2 handed. The change is to a 2da called baseitems.2da. It may be that this 2da is in your override. That is a possibility anyway.

Actually I checked and yes, there's a file named like that in my override. baseitems.2da, 91 KB.
It's dating back to a bunch of other files that seems to be cloak and robe related. Perhaps I installed a mod not to have your cloak showing up and it also changed that? I can't remember exactly...

Or, more likely, since one of the styles in the Alternative Combat Animations is the: "Classic" Warrior - Inspired by the movie "300", this style is meant for those who wield a shield in one hand and a shortspear or sword in the other... it could be that this mod also carries the 1-handed spear option along.

Not likely.  Check row 58 (shortspear) over at the column "WeaponSize".  The entry there should read 4.  If it reads 3 (or lower) then the problem is based on redefining that column and is limited to that weapon type.  If it reads 4 (as it should) then your issue is with your character size.

i bet its the baseitems.2da in the override.

Might as well allow whips in both hands while you are at it too. Much more fun to open up a whip and sword combo. '<img'>

Certain releases that include the ACP change the spear from a two-handed weapon to a one-handed weapon because of the afore mentioned custom animation. Its the baseitems.2da in your override that is causing the issue. Delete it and all should return to normal.

If you want to keep the spears this way and really really want to make sure you have it right download this package from Ben Harrison.

http://nwvault.ign.c....detail&id=7457

Alternatively, the next update to my personal HAK collection includes a modified baseitems.2da that turns spears and tridents one-handed, allows whips to be equipped in the off-hand, and re-enables magical rods, staves, and wands as equippable/wieldable items. You'll need Project Q to use it.

Unless you are using patch.ini and the /patch directory, HAKS are not loaded into the OC, SoU, or HotU. Custom HAKS are specific to custom modules and only affect those. What Gregor meant was that you have a custom override.

Actually I can keep it that way, it doesn't disturb me.
I don't think I'll be using a spear anyway (actually I would like to have a Warhammer and I'll stick with Icegrinder - once I'll get that Fighter level - until I find something better).
I was just curious to know what the reason was and if there was something else that I was missing.
All considered, I think it's really related to the baseitems.2da in the override brought by the ACP.
Thanks to all you guys for the help!
