NWN multiplayer campaign questions
« on: April 09, 2013, 09:03:15 pm »

I'm planning on trying out Neverwinter Nights with a friend of mine, and we would like to be able to play through the various campaigns. We both have GoG versions that include all of the extra content. Unfortunately, we've been reading that the campaigns are designed only for single player. Is this the case? If so, are there any fan mods that can rectify this situation?

Thanks for your time.

It is designed for a single player, but some/many of the fights can scale up - you'll probably find it very easy, though.  You shouldn't have any bugs until the third campaign, at which point you may need to use a plot item at times (you get something called "Relic of the Reaper" at the start which allows you to teleport to the party leader - among other things.  This will allow you to always "catch up" to the other person if you get separated during plot sequences).

I'm not aware of any fan mods which make the original campaigns better for multiplayer, but there are plenty of fan made multiplayer mods - the Aielund Saga works very well, for example, in multiplayer.  Especially for a party of two, since the campaign was technically designed for 1 PC and 2 NPC companions.  You can also bring along a companion to make a "full" party of three if you find the combat too difficult with just two people.

Thanks a bunch for the information. In your estimation, are the best of the fan made multiplayer mods on par with the single player campaigns and quality?

               Nope.

...

The best fan made mods are far, far better.

The original NWN campaign is solid but nothing amazing.  Shadows of Undrentides was much better.  Hordes of the Underdark was even better still.

But things like the Aielund Saga, the Prophet series, and some others blow them out of the water, and there are many more which are still at least as good as HotU (which, again, is quite good).

That's not even mentioning single player only modules, of course, or the online persistent worlds that are available.
