Is this game hack/slash?
« on: November 08, 2012, 05:18:55 am »

I hate IWD1 and 2 although I finished them both. I wasn't expecting a hack/slash game with weak plots from neither Biowre or Obsidian, but those games were just that. I grabbed NWN from gog and in the prologue I already can see something is very off; it doesn't seem one of great storytelling RPGs I was expecting.

Should I play this game for story? what's pros and cons of this game?

the original game has an average story, i liked it but most people didnt, if you dont like the original chapter 0 or 1, just skip to the hordes of the underdark expansion, it has the best characters and story out of the official nwn modules and there isnt very much knowledge of the previous modules required

Also, there are a vast abundance of user-made modules, many of which are better than the official campaigns. Some are hack-and-slash, but others are very story focused.

Play Shadows of Undrentide first, it's the prequel to Hordes, and those 2 campaigns together are pretty decent for story.

As mentioned, NWN's main strength is in its user-made modules. The campaigns are really just glorified tech demos.

If you want good story-heavy mods and you're 18+, try the A Dance With Rogues series or Elegia Eternum and Excrucio Eternum. You can find those and other good mods at http://nwvault.ign.com

The Aieund Saga has a good story. In fact, the author is in the process of writing a series of novels telling the story. Because of the nature of the game, some amount of hack-and-slash is inevitable.

I'd heartily recommend the Aielund Saga and A Dance With Rogues.  Both are far better than the original campaigns.

Also, something to point out: the STORY from the original campaigns is good (even the first campaign is decent).  There can just be a lot of fighting between story points at times.

There are more community-made modules than you can count and many, many of them are regarded as better stories than the original campaign. Download some of the Hall of Fame modules from the NWVault and give them a whirl.  Of course, there are plenty of great modules that aren't Hall of Fame (whether they came later and haven't achieved it yet or they're great modules that just didn't get the votes).  However, starting with Hall of Fame is a good jumping-in point.

SoU ends at about level 12 and HotU expects you to be at about level 15 when it starts. I don't know why they did that. The solution is to use a bridge module in between the two, like The Nether Scrolls.
HotU ends at around level 28. To bring your character the rest of the way to level 40, play the Sands of Fate series:
Sands of Fate 1 - Shadows over Heliopolis
Sands of Fate 2 - Gem Tower
Sands of Fate 3 - Pyramid of the Ancients

As a bridge module between SoU and HoU alternatively to The Nether Scrolls you could also play Shadowhaunt. The two authors were given just one month in order to build those "bridges" but they are heavy hack n' slash due to the short time they had to build'em up.
While the story of the OC starts with a "overused" plague spreading the one with SoU is something more original but the volume of subquests you find in the OC is outnumbering.

Let us not forget the RP/story driven Persistent Worlds out there. Very little about pre-conceived computer driven games can touch the stories managed LIVE by a human Dungeon Master and explored by LIVE PLAYERS via the PCs.

Be well. Game on.
