Hi, new to neverwinter nights
« on: June 19, 2012, 11:27:07 pm »

               Hi,

I bought the game a few months ago and haven't had a chance to play due to exams. Anyways, am looking at playing the game since i have a lot of free time now but I don't know how abouts I should do it (I already started some of the OC). Should i look into starting PWs straight away? Or complete OC first? Or look the different mods / modules there are. I'm a bit confused.

Runite.

If you like story, play OC, maybe SoU (though it worst of the three campaigns) and then HotU which is superior. Maybe also Sand of Fate, unofficial story continue but I didn't played it (yet). Also there is unlimited custom single player modules out there at neverwinter vault. So if you like story, NWN offers endless fun.

If you are new gamer and you don't remember classic like BG, IWD, PT and you are used to current MMOs then I guess you should try PWs though not many PWs have really big playerbase these days. Then it depends on gamestyle, there are three atm - roleplaying, action (can recommend Higher Grounds) and social (can recommend Sinfar).

First, welcome to the land of NWN!

I enjoyed the original campaign, Shadows of Undrentide, and Hordes of the Underdark.  I've also played a few single player modules from the Vault (link in ShaDoOoW's post above).  There are hundreds of such modules (adventures) available, some very short, some very long, some lower quality, some extremely great quality.

On the multiplayer aspect, if that's what you want to do you have options there, too.  You can play multiplayer on a LAN with friends, you can play multiplayer with one DM hosting the game on his/her computer, and you can play multiplayer on a dedicated server somewhere (usually a Persistent World).  Some modules (like the single player ones mentioned earlier) do well as multiplayer co-op adventures.  Other modules are developed specifically for PWs and are geared toward long-term play/replay and keeping things going for everyone.

Getting into NWN may seem overwhelming with all the options available.  Hundreds of single player modules (worth untold thousands of hours of game time potential), dozens of online PW servers (free to play, of course, for potentially many thousands more hours), and all of it with different styles of play...some more story based, some straight up hack and slash action, some mysterious, some down to earth, some epic and god-like, some strict role-play (in-character all the time), some completely non-role-play ("in character?  what's that?), some a mix of of all of these.

I suggest experimenting to see what you find and like.

I am a current gamer and have played a few MMOs (runescape, wow, guild wars...) so i'm guessing i'm going to try PW's first. It seems like this game seems "best" for its online roleplaying from what I've been reading.

I'm going to have a look at higher ground.

I think the most interesting stuff happens in online multiplayer from a development standpoint, but it depends on the community as to what is the right place for you. I prefer multiplayer so thats where I spend my time.

Nevertheless, the NWN community has produced very good single player modules. Better than what I have found commercially elsewhere. I have finished very few commercial RPGs (almost none in fact) but have played through a number of NWN modules produced by the community from beginning to end. They are much more interesting than what comes out of the tortured design process of a commercial studio.

So if you are into multiplayer, go for it. But if you like single player, you've come to the right place too.

How does NWN single player different from say... morrowind? Since I have been playing that game the most recently.

No idea. As I said, most commercial single player bores me to tears and so I don't finish them. And this goes for the modules that bioware released in the original campaign as well as a number of the premium modules. I just couldn't get through most of them.

The reason why I touted NWN single player modules is that the community modules are unconventional and thus interesting. Stuff that never would have gotten past the professionals at a studio turns out to be quite refreshing. And there is so much of it, you are likely to find something to your taste.

You'll have to ask others however whether there is anything comparable to morrowind.

NWN official campaign is divided into chapters, each chapter is set in different city and you cant go back. There are always five henchmans you can hire in each chapter and they have their quests you can help them to finish and they getting better and better. Its also possible to hire and complete quest for each of them. Monsters in areas doesnt respawn and game contains huge amount of secondary quests and many of them has several ways to complete them.

The NWN OC may be a bit boring because the character you play is low lvl and doesnt posses so much talents etc. But later in game it becomes more and more interesting and second chapter has very awesome quests like assassination or even maze-contest between several adventurers and you.

In short, NWN OC is rather roleplaying based, it contains lots of NPC reactions, quests and texts.

For SoU, I never been able to finish it, such boring it was so cant tell, but HotU is my favorite. This campaign takes place in very interesting story, starts at lvl 15 up to lvl 24 and its epic. Not only you travel across mysterious Undermountain, you get into drow city, see beholders and then you will be teleported into hells of Cania where you find someone from NWN OC (so if you play NWN OC first, you find this very interesting).

Whole game is very direct and there is a lot of action, you find very powerful items and face very strong Demon in the end. And whats most interesting is that upon a game you make many quests and decisions. And there are more ways to complete the game - and if that happens, the game tells you story of all peoples you found and interject on your travels. Is deep really.
