best choice of class
« on: April 19, 2012, 09:29:05 pm »

I know that just about any build is OK to use in the OC and SoU/HotU, but is there any character class that people think is a best fit to use from a role playing perspective?  In other words, do people think the included campaigns were designed with any particular race/class in mind?  I'm just wondering what people think about this.  For instance, I find it hard to imagine a druid or ranger being trained in the Academy (among other classes).  Myself, I'm leaning towards human fighter, or maybe paladin.

What about the other modules included with the diamond edition?

Thanks for your inputs.

For the OC I enjoy playing my Dwarven Fighter/Cleric/Dwarven Defender. Not sure of the level arrangement but I tend to go heavy with the cleric and DD levels. I also enjoy playing a Elven Cleric/Wizard/Arcane Archer with the levels getting split between cleric and AA.
I have played paladins and fighters as well and they seem to be the easiest to use.

Personally to fit into the RP of the OC and SOU?HOTU I would think alignment would play more into the rp aspect of the mods. Hopefully some of this helps. '<img'>

With key word being "designed"...

Keep in mind that ranger and druid play a rather significant "natural" role in Chapter 2 of the OC.  Druid even has a very detailed subquest (The Druid Trials) devoted to developing that class.

There is at least one instance where being "Good" means reaping larger benefits.  Your didn't mention alignment in your OP but alignment is often important in roleplay.

You also didn't mention sex bias but the OC seems to lean towards greater opportunities for males.  I've noticed little chauvinism within the expansions.

The OC was written with a few special interactions based on race so I tend to play non-humans like dwarven clerics, halfling ranger, gnomish wizard, elven AAs, etc.  I just find it more interesting even though it can have its cost.

IMO the Academy is just a snapshot of your toon's origin and not much more.  The adventures will gradually mold your character to become either a devotee to that initial selection or a personality that is influenced into other disciplines according to the NPC and storyline.

The fact that a romance with Aribeth is possible would lead me to believe that an elven build would be appropriate for that path.  Humans can pair with elves but it is NEVER recommended, for obvious reasons.

SoU seemed biased towards paladin to me.  That's just my opinion based on the special treatment in a few places.  Never really like playing pally myself, but it significantly changed my SoU experience when I tried it.  I think it was human.

The bias in HotU is less distinct for me, though it appears to be biased towards any melee class.  Race-wise, I've not noticed any particular roleplay advantage with any, though it would be continuing the one begun in SoU.

I agree on the fact that the programmers were not thinking at a race in particular (in the OC), i.e Nyathar will allow you to free the animals without a persuade check if you're ranger or druid while the quests for Eltoora were only for arcane spellcasters. Elaith Craulnober would let rogues help him without persuade check too. The sex component was more present indeed, look at the "Moonstone Mask affair", a male would earn 100 XPs from the 2 girls while a female character can get 50 XPs only. Maybe they just tried to balance this with the persuade checks in general. A female character could try to flirt with Orrean (the elven guard on Meldanen's mansion) or the cook guarding the Bloodsailors' nest. I read in this forum that Paladins earn much more enhanced gear in SoU but if I don't get wrong they're not encouraged into bashing barrels and chests in friendly environments in order not to affect their lawful alignment.

Thanks for the input guys.  How about the premium modules, any suggestions?

For my style of play, a Ftr/ Rog (or Ftr/ Rog/ CoT) is the most versatile character to play a wide variety of mods. UMD covers magic use well enough generally, Search and Disable Trap removes obstacles, Open Locks removes even more, and Tumble aids survival. And the Ftr/ CoT lvls boost melee needs, as well as armor pref be it Light, Medium, or Heavy.

For premium modules it depends; there are some modules made for mages, others  are for rogues and  others are for fighters types. The best that you can do is read the description (if there is any) and try to figure which class will be the most adecuate. If the module says "all classes" well then there should be no problem and be anything.
Oh and sometimes the authors give a hint in their description... For example, if the module is about the PC joining an army to save a city or country, then a fighter character might be the better choice.

You also can try and use "testing or scounting characters" ( as I call them)  that might not experience every situation from a module, but those characters will give you a general idea about the "feel" of the module and the oportunities available for each class.
