I know that just about any build is OK to use in the OC and SoU/HotU, but is there any character class that people think is a best fit to use from a role playing perspective? In other words, do people think the included campaigns were designed with any particular race/class in mind? I'm just wondering what people think about this. For instance, I find it hard to imagine a druid or ranger being trained in the Academy (among other classes). Myself, I'm leaning towards human fighter, or maybe paladin.
With key word being "designed"...
Keep in mind that ranger and druid play a rather significant "natural" role in Chapter 2 of the OC. Druid even has a very detailed subquest (The Druid Trials) devoted to developing that class.
There is at least one instance where being "Good" means reaping larger benefits. Your didn't mention alignment in your OP but alignment is often important in roleplay.
You also didn't mention sex bias but the OC seems to lean towards greater opportunities for males. I've noticed little chauvinism within the expansions.
The OC was written with a few special interactions based on race so I tend to play non-humans like dwarven clerics, halfling ranger, gnomish wizard, elven AAs, etc. I just find it more interesting even though it can have its cost.
IMO the Academy is just a snapshot of your toon's origin and not much more. The adventures will gradually mold your character to become either a devotee to that initial selection or a personality that is influenced into other disciplines according to the NPC and storyline.
The fact that a romance with Aribeth is possible would lead me to believe that an elven build would be appropriate for that path. Humans can pair with elves but it is NEVER recommended, for obvious reasons.
SoU seemed biased towards paladin to me. That's just my opinion based on the special treatment in a few places. Never really like playing pally myself, but it significantly changed my SoU experience when I tried it. I think it was human.
The bias in HotU is less distinct for me, though it appears to be biased towards any melee class. Race-wise, I've not noticed any particular roleplay advantage with any, though it would be continuing the one begun in SoU.
