The other reason to install is that the NWToolet will sometimes complain, as will some external third party utilities, but you may not need those. I didn't have much issue with the toolset even when it did complain. You could also just export your registry keys for NWN. I transferred my ginormous NWN1 install from an older machine to the new HP i7-2720 with ATi 6770 I got a few months back...

I've been moving around copies of my install for a while ever since somebody mentioned it on the forums here.  At least if it's Windows, I just change the CD keys in the ini file.  I could be wrong but I seem to recall that if you run the updater it will fix your registry keys if something needs them to work.  You can cancel out and don't have to go through the rest of the updating process after it fixes your regkeys.  Try at your own risk, it's been a while since I played around with that.

There are some regestery keys with NWN.   The only reason you would need them though is if you are installing one of the patches.  Since the game is no longer being patched there is no longer a need for the regestery settings.

Not the only reason. If a user downloads a community made utility, it might need does registry entries to be there. While just starting the game does create some entries, it is always a good idea to run the Configuration scan once if NWN was not installed but was copied to a drive from another drive, system or any other media.

One example is my NWN override manager which needs all entires created by a config scan in order to function  properly and not bug, ':police:'
