All I can say is "follow your bliss", you never know what heights, or remarkable achievments it may lead to.

Gaming is not always a worthless endeavor...

If you are an adult, have responsibilities which do not permit you much time to play, if you were talking about sacrificing your life to play a game, that's not a worthless endeavor, that's being irresponsible.

When a kid sits at a computer all day & night playing games, that's not an endeavor, that's a wasted youth.

If the game is teaching the kid things, again, not really a worthless endeavor.

Gaming isn't really an endeavor, it's entertainment.

It has value, otherwise people wouldn't game, so it cannot be worthless, not at all, in fact, many people make a heck of a lot of money playing games, and often playing games leads to making them, definitely not a worthless endeavor!

So, using their logic, you could say, going to the movies is not only a worthless endeavor, but it is also becoming an expensive one too.. '<img'>

It's not gaming which is worthless, but the quality of the gaming the business is ready to offer to the kids. That Foldit project which you're refering to is one smart one... between millions of dumb games coming out every year. And from the little you forced me to read, and I thank you for that, it comes from universities, brains and hearts, not the market, the opposite.
Now... on the other hand... it's not because a very few fellow players saved the planet that any player became a hero.
And even if NWN isn't the stupidiest game ever, since it could be, all depending on what its user, player or builder, choose to have it doing, one of its true but untold purposes is to have you avoiding to live your life.
Behind the first step of real and healthy fun.
Even as an adult myself, I had to make a strong choice recently, and I chose reality. Also because it's way more challenging than winning some other realm's battle.
Using isn't a problem, when abusing might.
I see gaming as part of our future myself. To the point it's, to me, very near to the way we people are going to work, study, act and live in the coming years, as this Foldit idea, among many others, shows. When I play, or built, I also have that feeling I'm using the best our civilisation came out with. Regenerating every day.
I'm leaving in my time. Already using stuff yet only experimental. And going against that, what I call my instinct, my human nature, could also be another way to avoid my life. I don't believe in black and white. What matters is knowing why you're doing anything.
And doing.
Being aware. Alert.
For instance, I played NWN as an offensive hero, for years. Only to realise I became quite defensive in real life for a while. I'm pleased gaming helped me to highlight that. Which shows it could be the other way around, being a hero meaning nothing only you're in a deep doodoo.
Also, I hate dying in game, refering to another recent thread here, one I didn't have the guts to answer yet. That only says a lot to me. Being afraid of dying isn't living.
The only worry is not forget to live.
I'm glad you chose to write this in the general discussion forum.
I say you are truly on topic.

For a good drive, you better hold your will wheel. Tight. Especially when you get some people aboard.
We're not alone.
Probably my most recent discovery.
Some modules, the ones I care about, talk about life, in their own ways.
Games could be like books, only written by amateurs. Before the next step, eventually.

It was about time someone harvested the almost unlimited energy of gamers for other purposes.

I mean, isn't CC all about such?

Yeah the fold project was cool.  Something that computers could not figure out but we, the humans ,did. I also read some studies about driving that indicate that gamers make better drivers, something about how they come to expect the unexpected.
Mostly it's a waste of time, but most human entertainments are.  Golf is a waste of time, but I love playing it.

The waste is about the amount of time you're spending at playing.
But playing is no waste.
Up to  a certain point, playing refreshes me, sharpens me.
I believe as you said "gamers make better drivers". It makes me think faster. Like if I saw it all already.
Plus, I don't drive.
