I shudder to think of the disruption to the community if EA shuts down these boards. Amethyst Dragon has gotten a good start on rebuilding an unofficial nwn website. I'm wondering what the response would be of the community as a whole about moving the forums over there, too? Would people be willing to actually do it? or would they rather wait until doomsday and just set some new forums up when the time comes?

BTW... AD is accepting suggestions (as well as encouragemnet and props) for the new website at this thread.

Will it be NWN only, and will we be able to post script in a separate window, like the old site. If so, then I would be happy to switch.

I'm not sure I'll agree on the forum being shut down, despite the history of EA with previous ownership of games in the past. Origin was by far one of my favorite companies in my youth because of the stellar experience I had with the Ultima series - my top of all time - but I'm going to say it won't happen here.

Why? Well, in using Origin as a comparison, the digital age had not begun and a game was really only as good as the word of mouth it received or how many times it happened to be pirated via the BBS community that thrived back then, as well as purchases once that word of mouth spread. A company becoming swallowed by another really had little impact, outside of the games either turning to mush - as the Ultima series eventually did - or simply falling into obscurity.

Today, games are driven by a thriving and strong community and information travels fast. Despite the current situation of the legacy forum being down - regardless of what others may think - I feel it is in bad form to remove communities that help grow new gaming titles and revenue. One can argue that such a thing has happened with the legacy forums for Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate and other old titles Bioware released but a community for those titles still is available here. To shut down these forums of older titles made by Bioware could very well hurt that potential of capturing the interest of those players for a new title. The more eyes noticing a new game release, even if it doesn't interest you, could very well interest five others.

I'm still being optimistic here in saying that the information on the legacy server is still available and will be again. Perhaps without search functionality but rather in a more archived state.

Bioware was one of the companies that captured that youthful imagination the Ultima series brought me and they've treated me well over the years too and if it means waiting months for the information on the legacy forums to return, so be it.

FP!

I don't think we need to move to a new forum wile this is still here...but we definately need to prepare for the worst...as we have learned so far.

The most important thing is not to become too scattered when it happends.

I hope Amethyst Dragon's (AD) homepage will work as a sort of a "life-raft" for lost NWN players if that happends and that we won't be too scattered.

The worst scenario would ofcourse be that AD and this forum dissapear at exactly the same time...but he's been around long enough I think :-P

Content is king.  Get enough content on that "other" website, and the point is moot.

We will all go there, where the content is to be found, of course.  So get all the info from here combined with the info from the legacy forums (as much as possible, that is) and we will all migrate there, where the info is.

The plan is for neverwinternights.info to become something other than "my" homepage for NWN.  Even if I were to leave the NWN community, I'd make sure to pass on the site (and domain) to someone else (as long as they get reliable, non-ad-saturated hosting).

And yes, I guess I have been around for a while. '<img'>

Fester until this current fiasco with the master server I would have agreed with you, but now with EA clearly calling the shots I'm not confident that we'll get any advanced warning. Superfly has hit it right in the head. My fear is that one day we'll log in and the forums will just be gone. At that point it's too late to organize an alternative and we basically lose the entire community. I have no doubt some evil little gnome at EA is wringing his hands with delight at the prospect on the mistaken assumption that without my friends here I'll turn to a shiny new EA game (never gonna happen, gnome, ME2 was the last EA game I'm ever buying from you and I lost access to it today when I uninstalled Origin). Until now I would never believe Bioware would ever do such a thing to us, but the situation unfolding now with the master server makes it very clear that the good folks at Bio aren't the ones calling the shots and IMO EA will drop this forum in a heartbeat if they can find a dime in it.
