I just signed up at Wotc and asked them the same question. We'll see what they have to say!

So far, so bad. WoTC said that they don't issue licenses for any use of their intellectual property. I knew that was coming, but they didn't say they owned the characters in NWN1. I asked them straight out. I'll get back with the evasive answer!

they don't own the NWN1 character copy but they don't need to when they own the intellectual property of it.

I realize that if the Counsel of Wizards owns D&D they probably own Abir-Toril and the land of Faerun and presumably it's population. World domination is bad enough in the real one, do we really need to extend it to places we go to escape.

Some of these companies will spend millions of dollars to advertize their products, yet when someone offers them free advertizing and a pat on the back they, run and hide. I think that one of the evils my, now anonymous, characters will have to address is greed!

Like I've seen posted on this site, one of the most attractive things about NWN 1 is it's open architecture and the ability to visualize your own ideas, as long as you don't profit from it.

I think there is enough talent in the gaming community to create worlds and characters of our own, free from landlords who want to stuff their own pockets! I envision a place where we can be creative without restrictions. Any ideas, or is this another of my fantasys?

I don't like talking to lawyers, you will always get the run around till you talk to the legal department, but before you get that far your boss will probably come over and tell you put your nose into this (as he piles on work on your desk)... haha!

I guess that's their way of casting a "Shut up" spell on me!!!!

What about a community gaming thing? Is there a place where gamers do their own thing, a place where we are free to create, share, publish and maybe make a few bucks for ourselves? Could we come up with our own game engine and do a freeware kind of thing? There certainly is enough "amateur" brain matter out there!

I think this is already being done...you might wish to check with the Citadel project (assuming they have not shut their doors).

I personally would suggest a Pathfinder CRPG, as the true successor to NWN.  To boldly go, where no CRPG has gone before!

Word.

Give us what we want - a simple to use toolset, a complete DM Client, a Server-side Client, an open source framework, coupled with Pathfinder ruleset and IP (models, etc).  And, of course, an explosive, complete OC!  Yeah!

GIVE IT TO ME, BABY!
