Looking for an assassin build
« Reply #120 on: August 23, 2011, 02:22:34 pm »

Somewhere on the Legacy forums of auld, there is a post on the mechanics of spot, listening, hiding, and moving silently.

I believe that listen is superior, mechanically (meaning how the engine handles the checks) to spot.

Ugh. Okay, I've already started and have been putting my points into spot and set traps. Man assassins are hurting in the skill department...lol.

This is why a MMM sin is just more flexible.  If the creatures are sneak and para immune, then hit them with magic.

I made a level 40 version of this character just to mess around with. I agree its powerful...as a wizard. You don't even need the rest of it. My AB was terrible without buffing and even then it wasn't great. With that character, I just didn't feel the need to go into combat dual wielding when my highest level class is wizard. I'm a 2nd edition guy where characters felt more specialized not like a swiss army knife. If I'm going to role play an assassin using the assassin class then I want the assassin class to be the higest level. Traps have been working great so that's been my equalizer like a wizards spells. But that's why I asked about UMD cause I can't afford, it seems, to max out both. The MMM is powerful no doubt. But, to me, the character concept is terrible and that factor is important to me when playing the game or else I won't get into it regardless of our powerful the combination may be. It's just my opinion of course.

Fair enough, you should play that which you feel most comfortable with.

That build is definitely sick. I can see the synergy you were talking about. Casters have always been the most powerful even in BG2. Your also right that those pesky undead would not be a problem whatsoever like slicing through butter. It just didn't feel like a dual wielding assassin-based character with some spells added in. It felt reversed where I mainly cast spells but could dual wield if I felt like it. I ended up just playing it more like a straight up spellcaster with a few goodies thrown in from other classes. I have tunnel vision I know...lol. But I appreciate the suggestion nonetheless and I will keep that build written down for later use. I think I ultimately need to embrace the 3rd edition concept where characters can do several things well. I've had a hard time with that for some reason.

Well, here is what I usually do :

Buff up to the max - and use your metamagic feats wisely!  Extend and Empower really come in handy here!  Then scout under Invis or Hide, whatever.  For large m0bs, retreat, lay traps, then hit one of the more powerful with a DA, hack on it a bit, then retreat to the traps, let them go up, then disappear...invis, whatever.

For Bosses, you can either do a DA, or, if they seem to be out of bounds, then slay them with copious amounts of magic.

Remember, with a high DC, DA lasts a LOOOOOOONG time!  You can afford to hit with it, then retreat and come back later.

I normally do not use spells unless absolutely necessary other than the buffing.  With the Fast Rod of Buffing, that usually takes care of pesky clickfests.  You will probably have to do Flame Weapon and Greater Magic Weapon manually, so that both of your dual wielded weapons are affected (you have to target the weapons themselves manually on the paper doll, NOT click on your figure ingame - that namely only affects your main hand weapon).

Of course, you could go with a double weapon - that saves on spells.

UMD: you need 24 to be able to cast scrolls with 0% failure (inc cha modifier)
SET Traps: is 15 for all traps except deadly gas (inc modifiers and take 20)
SEARCH: you can get away with very little in many campaigns, including OC. Searching against another PC who set traps means you need to max it out and even then it can be impossible.
LISTEN/SPOT: Listen is better than spot and allows you to 'see' through walls and possibly see invisible people ... apparently... Can't say it ever happened to me much *grin*. SPot works over a longer distance tho iirc sooooo . Wiki explains the search mechanics webshamen mentioned very well.

...and yip, ass as sin's need more skill points!

Have fun '<img'>

Yea I'm running Mick's build Ranger10/Assassin28/SD2. So far its pretty damn good. I'm in chapter 2 of the OC. The only thing I hate is the lack of skill points so I can't pick locks myself. I have to keep switching around henchmen. I usually use Linu the Cleric but everytime I come across a chest we can't bash, I have to switch Linu out for Tomi. It's definitely becoming a pain. Otherwise so far so good. DA has made things much easier at times. Very cool.
