               This forum started discussing the Neverwinter 2011 and someone said it was live.  It is not.  The website is a mass of forums and trailers and art work.  

As per Atari's Annual Report located here http://www.atari.com...EPORT_10-11.pdf   and looking on page 4 under Financial Highlights (1.) you will see that they have divested themselves of Cyrptic Studios on March 31, 2011.  

What remains now is who has the rights to the Neverwinter 2011 MMORPG game that was in development by Cryptic for owner Atari.

I thinks someone dropped the ball again on Neverwinter.

               Most MMOs are WoW clones because WoW made money, and everyone else who wants to do an MMO says "obviously that is the way to do it" and then tries to make their own version of WoW with different graphics and maybe a different system or two.

What they fail to get, time after time, is that WoW was there first, did it better, and has the money to keep adding content.  If you're going to succeed with an MMO, you need to do something different.

Because they make WoW clones, the best of them generate some excitement and some up-front revenue, and then peter out as people get bored because the developer can't add content fast enough to keep peoples' interest.

Cryptic has been rather clever about how it went about doing this, buying up old popular board or computer game licenses and re-releasing the games in an MMO format.  This guarantees a big initial buy-in from fans of those games, since the art assets are very nice.  Of course, once you get IG, it is the same MMO with a different skin.

The thing is, as long as they are relying on their own dev team to generate new content, they'll never be able to do it fast enough to retain peoples' interest.  People are even beginning to find WoW stale - though the immense capital available allowed them to add content for a long time.

NWN is still a viable online game 9 years after release because the robust toolset and standalone servers allowed everyone to generate their own content with few limitations.  This allowed - and continues to allow - a phenomenal variety in servers to play on.  When game companies stop trying to make the next WoW and figure out how to allow unrestricted user-generated content and make a profit off it without stifling it, then we will see the next successor to NWN.

You pretty much said it all.

I only feel the need to comment your last paragraph and clearly state that I think that NWN's longetivity (and grandness) not only comes from the toolset and that you can host private servers but MOSTLY because it is a great game engine to start with.

To explain what I mean is...lets say that the upcoming Neverwinter gets a decent toolset. Still....who wants to design areas for a WoW-clone....cause that is pretty much the engine still.

I think that is what it is the most important and then how good the toolset is, is more icing on the cake.

               How good the toolset is or isn't, and how close they model World of War f'ing Crack isn't an issue for to continuation of the Neverwinter MMORPG.

Neverwinter MMORPG is not live, and may never go live.

Atari, according to their financials (I gave the link above), has divested themselves of Cryptic.

"Cryptic Studios divestiture: In line with the previously stated strategy of fewer but more profitable releases and further expansion into casual online and mobile games, the Company has determined that external development creates more flexibility in the changing marketplace. Therefore, the Company has made the decision to divest itself from Cryptic Studios. On May 31, 2011,  Perfect World Co., Ltd. and Atari announced that they had entered into an agreement whereby Perfect World would acquire 100% equity interest in Cryptic Studios from Atari, the sole shareholder of Cryptic Studios. Under the stock purchase agreement, Perfect World will pay an aggregate purchase price of approximately €35.0 million in cash, subject to working capital and other adjustments as provided in the agreement. The consummation of the transactions contemplated in the agreement is subject to satisfaction of closing conditions.  As of March 31, 2011, the Company accounted Cryptic as a “discontinued operation” in the Statement of Income starting on April 1, 2009 and as “assets / liabilities held for sale” in the Balance Sheet as of March 31, 2011."

And in the same document:

"25.2.4. Walker Digital v. Atari, Inc., Cryptic Studios, Inc. and others.  Atari, Inc. and Cryptic Studios, Inc. have been sued, along with 20 other video-game-industry entities by a company known as Walker Digital LLC for patent infringement.  The suit resides in federal court in the District of Delaware and was filed on April 11, 2011. Atari has not yet been served."

And:

"25.2.5. Walker Digital v. Cryptic Studios, Inc. and others. Cryptic Studios, Inc. has been sued, along with 8 other video-game-industry entities in a second suit patent infringement initiated by Walker Digital LLC."

This is public knowledge, I am not blasting anyone.

Neverwinter MMORPG was scheduled out in 2011, but I don't think we will even see a Beta given the Owner's outstanding proficient repair of the Bioware Legacy Server and Authenitication Server.

I don't know why you keep repeating this. If you read the topic title CAREFULLY....you will see that I said that their SITE went live...and not the actual game...

About the other stuff you wrote, yeah, Atari did sell Cryptic. However companies theese days seem to sell and buy other companies in a rapid maner....so it really doesn't have to mean anything...even though there might be some shaking behind the scenes for not having a stable company like Atari behind your back...so yeah...its probably not good for the development of Neverwinter......

               Little bit off-topic but this is very interesting history about Bioware.

It came up on the Neverwinter forums discussing the NWN heritage.

Edit: Take a note that the developer mentions, in part 2, that they realised that NWN could be used as a full out MMO...the so called Persistent Worlds...
