What is the spirit of NWN?
« on: May 30, 2011, 01:42:48 pm »

OK, so I hear RPers crying that action modules are too focused on "Hulk Smash", clearly not the case, an action players don't like fighting goblins till they are bored to death, also the action players think that RP is a game of talk.

Admittingly I've walked into some bizarre RP servers where everything is wierd, to me standing around chatting is kind of silly, your not really playing the game, you are reading the game, and this is where story heavy modules come in..

To me storyline modules sometimes focus too much on NPC Interraction / Storyline, make massive use of cutscenes, but this is not the spirit of the game, it's an extreme...

I don't think players like extreme..

I think they like balanced game play where all can be entertained...

It's just hard to find these types of servers...

What is the spirit of NWN to you?

               The spirit of NWN?

- If you want heavily social/chatting roleplay, it can be that.
- If you want straight up hack and slash, it can be that.
- If you want a low magic, low fantasy game, it can be that.
- If you want a high magic, high fantasy game, it can be that.
- If you want a game set in a modern environment, it can even be that (thanks to the d20 Modern work out there).
- If you want a perfectly serious game, it can be that.
- If you want your game to have some silliness, it can have that.

In my opinion, the "spirit" of NWN is whatever you want it to be.  Whatever you put into it, that's what you can get out of it.  Just like PnP D&D (well, the entire d20 system), you can make the game into basically whatever you want.

Some players like extremes.  There are some that prefer all combat, and others that prefer the spoken (written) interaction that comes from strict roleplaying.  Some want the "story" to revolve around them, some want to be a smaller part of a bigger world.  It just depends on the player.

I agree with amethyst. Different players want different things from the game. Some want to hack and slash, some want tactical combat challenges, and some want to role play and will happily play for hours without drawing a weapon. The beauty of NWN is that it suits all of these gaming styles.

It reminds me very much of the heady days in the late 70's when the original D&D came out...

To take a broader view, I believe the spirit of NWN--to distill it down to a single definition--is community.
  • A community of players enjoying the experience of adventure with each other, whatever the level and scope of the adventure may be; from legendary forays against entire armies in the Outer Planes, to a simple mystery in a backwater town.
  • A community of builders sharing their adventures with the world, whether they be a novel concept with a new twist, a vibrant and detailed world full of possibility to occupy any willing band of adventurers for years to come, or anywhere that the imagination ventures.
  • A community of creators pushing the limits of adventure in a game nearly a decade old, implementing capabilities in the game not even fathomable at release.

It is this community that has fulfilled and even surpassed the apparent potential of this game over the years, providing for the capability of NWN--as AD so deftly put it--to be whatever you want it to be.

You just need a community to get there.

I think AD said it best.  To paraphrase: It's whatever you want it to be.
For me my main focus has been to improve the way the AI responds in combat, with an ancillary focus in npc behaviors.  I really got a kick out of making cows act like cows and chickens act like chickens.  The best compliment I ever got was from a guy from South Korea who said: 'I really like your barbarian scout, he act like real person.'
So defining your vision and then creating it is, for mee the spirit of NwN, at least from a building perspective. Also I should note that the game has taken on a life of it's own and that is part of it's spirit. All the great contributions on the vault are certainly part of that spirit, as I echo the previous posters comment.

I would respectfully diasagree with this sentiment. A very wise man once said, "You can't please all of the people all of the time". No one gaming style will ever please everyone. You can try to maximize your appeal, but that road has it's own potholes. These games tend to become homogeneous and bland. The path to a healthy community isn't homogenization, it's diversity.

Maybe true but I think you are thinking of this quote: "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and you can fool all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all the time."  PT Barnum.
Or more likely maybe you are thinking of Ricky Nelson who sang, in Garden Party.
"You can't please everyone, you've got to please yourself."
So you are probably combing those to quotes into one sentiment/statement, which is pretty much how our brains work anyway.

Actually it dates back a lot further than PT Barnum. It dates back to Abe Lincoln who was quoting poet John Lydgate. PT Barnum just kinda stole it and twisted it and played it off as his own. He did that kind of stuff a lot. But he knew people would believe it. After all... there's one born every minute, right?
