               Its Sauron :-P

Well...maybe not but it has been called a "demon eye".

Maybe someone who actually played the original campaign can explain it better :-P

A quick search brought up this result from Rob Bartel...

"In the game's original story, which never really made it to print but was around when we were developing a lot of our promotional materials, Morag was a much more active character throughout the campaign. The all-seeing eye was an amulet that the players could acquire from various sources throughout the game. Through these amulets, Morag could speak with the players, slowly turning them to the proverbial 'Dark Side' with bribes and persuasive arguments. The ultimate intent had been to plant the seeds for a split in the multiplayer party, with some players potentially revealing themselves as Morag's secret agents in the final module. Aribeth's sword, then, had been intended as a similar conduit for Morag and instrumental to Aribeth's fall as a paladin.

As it turns out, our focus shifted partway through towards more of a single-player experience and much of the original story was reinvented and replaced as a result. I didn't have much to do with the story beyond that point, and turned my attention to a variety of scripting tasks instead. I jumped in and wrote the Castle Jhareg plot (glad to see so many of you enjoying it!), but that was about it, I'm afraid.

But enough of my blather, you've got a game to play.

Well the illuminati reference certainly seems applicable, especially since that last by Rob Bartel mentions the all-seeing eye.  Of course that has been used as a symbol for secret societies through the ages.  So more of sideways glance of a reference to secret societies in general rather than a direct reference to the Illuminati.  My take at least.
