Steam release huge boost for NWN2
« Reply #15 on: January 11, 2011, 09:00:42 am »

I don't know who whipped up this lawsuit but it has probably been the biggest single massacre of the D&D brand itself as NWN1 probably brought D&D to moore people than the owners of this brand could ever dream of.....thats why it was stupid....

Any chance you people moaning about what was wrong with NWN2 4+ years ago might be surprised to find out that, as with NWN, the issues were addressed over the years with successive patches?

Nobody complains that NWN didn't have X/Y/Z when it was released (it wasn't perfect either).  Because these things were addressed.

Same goes for NWN2.  Except perhaps it didn't have the same support from Atari in terms of Obsidian being allowed to go with the "it will be done when it's done" approach like BioWare was able to (more or less).

Both games are great.

Not sure why one can't like one without bashing the other (or so it seems).

Defending the game is about as pointless as bashing it. People will respond and then you've derailed the thread as effectively as if you had listed complaints about the game.

Would be easiest to just keep this related to Steam and NWN1, which is actually an interesting prospect, for me at least.

NWN on Steam would indeed be interesting.

Wonder how long GoG has it for?  And whether or not Steam would be interested in a 10+ year old game.

I see games many of the same games on Direct2Drive and Steam, so why not have NWN1 on GOG and on Steam, heck even on Direct2Drive while your at it

I'm not sure what Steam's policy has been on carrying old games, sadly. I doubt it'd be Steam that limited distribution so much as whether or not Atari would even bother with such an old game. D2D would be nice, too.

Well if NWN2 is 4ish years old, and sells for $20, I'm guessing NWN would have to be no more than $10, probably less.

At that price point, I wonder if either side would see the requisite work required to organize a Steam release would be "worth it".

It could be that it would cost more to accomplish than it would bring in, which may be why it showed up on GoG instead.

Steam sells Bethesda's Morrowind and it was released in 2002 so I think as long as the game would sell, and NWN would sell, they would be happy to have it for sale...

The thing to do with Steam is watch for sales, especially for older games like Morrowind, Titan Quest, etc you can get them for 5 to 10 bucks depending on the sale....

I work in Quality Assurance, and would love to know what QA Process they were using over at Obsidian, where their QA Department all out drinking at lunch time when they missed all these bugs, and the fact that they continued to release the game in the state it was in was a joke.

They used the 'take what you've got and get it ready to ship in 2 weeks love from Atari' process. Fact.

Steam definitely carries some older games. I know they have Freedom Force (2002) and its sequel and it has added quite a bit of new interest in those games, at least from the perspective of what the FF modding community has seen. Of course, FF never had the reach that NWN did/does, particularly due to the lack of cooperative multiplay to keep the game fresh. That means NWN would benefit even more from former players thinking they might want to play again.

We went to GOG to get a copy of NWN Diamond for my gf's new laptop and it went pretty smoothly, at least until we had to miss a weekend to get the keys for MP play. I think GOG is okay, but Steam has a much bigger player base and, it seems, better partnering with other companies (e.g. coming preinstalled on many Dell/Alienware machines). It would be a great opportunity to get NWN on Steam.

I think the problem is NWN1 was developed by Bioware, who as far as I know, still retain some rights. Bioware are now owned by EA (publisher), who have no rights to d&d, as they belong to Atari (publisher).
I would love to see NWN1 on steam in its full glory, but I don't think it'll happen '<img'>

Good thread. I made a similar one a couple of months ago but lets talk about this again.

EDIT: LoL, I just realised this WAS my thread. Guess you just "necrod" it :-P Anyway...good on ya!

I don't know if it is a problem really who owns Bioware. Atari still owns NWN1 so I don't think that matters.

Also NWN1 was released for downloading on GOG which was a huge leap forward at that time (and still is).

Anyway...as I mentioned before...Steam is a really powerful player on the games market and hence any visibility for NWN1 there would probably mean a LOT.

The problem might instead be that many are thingking that NWN1 is too old or something. Personally I think it is not fair...as NWN2 has a lot less community members still than NWN1. Considered the age of the two games that says pretty much.

Also NWN1 seems to cater even more than NWN2 to multiplayer...which is what Steam was all about (from the start at least).

So yes...if NWN1 was released on Steam and perhaps even some nifty Steam functionality was added for this game this would mean a lot to all NWN1 fans out there.

Did anyone contact Steam in this matter?
