Wow - the more you play the more ya learn
« on: August 25, 2010, 05:14:27 pm »

I have always played NWN as a "pure" melee type character (no spell caster splashes) because it is "easier" and more my style. Thus I tend to pick Tomi in the OC for traps & locked chests/doors. I decided to start a new character with some changes as I keep seeing nifty gear for casters in higher levels.

I went with a Cleric/Fighter (right now 3 cleric w/ 1 splash fighter) - I chose Knowledge & Magic as my cleric spheres and.. wow. Knock + Detect Trap = bye bye Tomi! Large AoE detection and removal of traps and unlocking of stuff?! Gah! Why didn't I think to try this before?!

The only Knock spell I ever had experience with was a Single Target (PnP and I think BG/IWD) spell - not a huge range AoE.

Loving my Cleric/Fighter already - even more than my other recent creation (Barb 12/Fighter 2 in Chap 3 of OC right now). I have the protection of being able to wear any armor in the game (Divine Casting '<img'>), jump into Melee just fine (cleric proficiencies and fighter splash), and now I don't really need a thief [so far - I don't know the DC limits on Knock & Detect Trap]

NWN and NWN2 are, indeed, amazing creations in so many ways.

I'm guessing Knock will solve any of DC 30 and below.  I know it never worked on one lock that was set at DC 34 so am extrapolating (it's easy enough to find the exact number with the toolset).  Find Traps appears to disarm all traps in the campaigns perhaps because they don't use epic traps.Obviously, Knock will have no effect on plot-oriented placeables.

Knock and Find traps links, if you haven't visited them yet.

Knock, along with the pixie, in NWN are sort of ridiculous.  Fortunately, you can make chests knock immune(without making them plot) by setting a local variable.

Wait til you find Divine Favor (at vl 15 cleric +5 ab and +5 dam) and Div power (the most powerful spel in nwn)!! Just a hint: take wisdom to 19 and leave it there. All the rest stats go to strength and you will have so much fun! Also, keep fighter to 4 lvls to get Wpn spec, but you will be hurting your cleric by doing it.

check that out aswell for ideas to use for magic (since its new to you).

There is no DC limit on knock.  It opens everything not plotted or given the local variable.
