NWN Direct 2 Drive
« on: August 03, 2010, 08:52:56 am »

I've recently moved into a new laptop without a disc drive, and I'm trying to find a place to download NWN. I don't mind re-purchasing it if I have to pay for the DL, or using my old CD keys, but a $70 external drive to install it isn't going to happen.

Thus far I haven't found anything but the trial and modules for purchase or download, can anyone point me the right direction here? Is this even an option for a five year old game? Alternatively, does anyone know of a way to hook a computer with XP into a computer running Windows 7 and copy the stuff over?

I don't think there is a place to download NWN. Not yet at least.

You could try to move all the NWN files from your old computer. A cable should work...or it is probably easier to just put the files on an USB stick.

Not sure this kind of "install" will actually work though. It is probably worth a try.

I just copy the entire NWN folder on another computer, and it silmply makes another working NWN, from my home comp to my labtop for instance (on a Mac).

Does that work if I'm going from Windows XP to Windows 7?

Assuming you haven't yet trashed the machine which still has NWN installed on it and have no way of directly transferring the files between them ( XP to Win7 ), you could upload from the old PC to a network storage site (there are free ones available) and then download back to the Win7 machine from there.  A somewhat time-consuming procedure but yet an alternative to consider.

Not a bad suggestion except for the fact that it violates the EULA .

Flash drive would be the way to go.  If you don't have a Flash Drive  Burn them to CD or DVD.

It will help of course if you compress the files before you burn/transfer then.  If you don't have something that will compress them 7z can do it.  Even break the compression into the size packets you want to use.

On Hooking the two together, I dont know anything about Win 7.  You could connect the two with a CrossOver cable.

I would suggest doing a Google search on.  Connect Two Computers using a Crossover Cable

After it is just getting a shared folder for the computers.

You don't need a crossover cable if your computer is not too ancient.
one easy way to transfer files from one to the other is to download and install TightVNC

During setup install only the viewer client on the PC that has your NWN installed and only the server on the PC where you want to transfer your NWN install to. You do need a network cable between the 2 PCs.

Once you've installed TightVNC on both PCs, make sure that the server is running on the second PC and make sure you open up the configuration of the server and check "Enable file transfer"

Then on your NWN PC start a viewing session and on the Viewer toolbar you see a few icons, then click on transfer files and the rest should be easy to figure out. You don't even need to have files sharing enabled on any of the PCs, neither do you need to be on the same network name (i.e. "workgroup").

That should do it.

A good suggestion.

And yes,  the corssover cable is for if you do not have a local network.

If you do not have a local network the above Post will still work with the crossover cable.  the cable is just to hook the computers together without a router or switch.

Edit: Just another thought.  If you are not going to use your old computer, You could pull the hard drive and add it to your new one as a second Drive.  That is if the new system has the right conection for the drive.

Nic cards and/or Embedded Nic Cards have been doing auto negociation/auto connector detection for a little more then over a decade, so that is why I said you don't need a crossover cable to connect 2 PC's directly. Just a standard wired network cat 5 cable will do "IF" the OP's computers or Nic cards are not too ancient that is.

I'm not too sure about Windows (never tried it there) but between macs you can share your DVD drive over a LAN. If you haven't lost your old CDs and have a second computer with Windows, could 1) share drive 2) install through shared drive 3) patch the game. I think last patch removed CD check and you should be able to play fine without a DVD drive.

To tell you the truth, I have no idea where are my original CDs, Bioware's got my registration numbers in the old forum, and I install and re-install many times by copy past through some cable or WiFi my NWN since on different but all Mac computers, and they all worked fine. I don't see why it should be different with windows. You could even copy your player's preferences I presume... even if it's probably safer to do this kind of things again.
Funny, I don't think I ever played with the CDs in, 'cause this has always been strongly against my idea of freedom, and it's been 4/5 years now.

I believe that would be a perfect time to start saling NWN on the internet through downloading, since it's already so difficult to find and buy NWN CDs today, especially if you're not in a major town. I was on a long trip two months ago with a new laptop and no NWN in it, and I simply couldn't get it, and even pay for it again, unless I was going the unofficial way, which is now very easy since registration numbers aren't required any longer.
