When I play the modules I've tried, I get beaten pretty easily. It seems that you have to play through the official campaign(s) to level up your character first, but they're very long and I don't have time for them. Maybe there are easier modules for beginners, or mods that makes the gameplay more friendly to casual players?

Also, what purpuse do books serve in the game, and how do you identify items?

The first question is what modules have you tried? Did you read the whole of the description of them? The reason I ask is that there will be an item in the description that tells you what level your character needs to be to play them with some chance of success. So if you play a mod designed for a level 10 character and your character is only level 1 you are going to get right royally destroyed. There are first level mods on the vault its just a matter of looking for them.

There are a few ways to pre-level characters other than playing another module. Among them:

1. Open any module, use the console to give XP and level to whatever you like, then save the character. (I believe there may be a console command to just add levels but I've never use that one.)

2. Use a trainer module like this one by GreatInca to do it.

Some modules (like HotU) will automatically pre-level your character to the appropriate level when you load the module.  Others may DE-LEVEL a character in the same fashion to adjust to the appropriate difficulty.

Usually, books that need identification provide some sort of magical property and are used like any other item that casts spells.  The plain grey ones that require no ID are merely fluff and may contain some background information useful to the particular module you are playing. ID books as you would any item using the Lore skill or pay to have a merchant do it for you.

In the OC any shop owner can identify an item for you for a price.  Investing skill points in Lore will allow you to identify items yourself if your Lore is high enough and potions of Lore will help you identify items.  In some mods only wizard shops can identify items.  Sometimes a hired merc can identify items for you through conversation options if they have high Lore skills.

Thanks for the answers. I tried some random modules and some I believe that are official ones, like "The Dark Ranger's Treasure." I'm pretty much getting it figured out now. Thanks.
