How to make clients download the server custom content?
« on: July 15, 2015, 04:52:17 pm »

So, I recently installed CEP 2.61 and the Community Patch 1.71 into my module.

I have two copies of NWN (one for player and another for DM).

And I use my toolset on the Player one, so I installed the CEP and CP into my module, saved it, etc.

I logged in as a player fine. But when I was going to log in as DM, it asked for the CEP and CP files.

So I put the CEP and CP files into the DM installation too.

What I want to know is: is there a way that I can make the clients download these files automatically,

without the need to manually seach for them on our forums (or on the net)?

No, player has to download them manually.

But for community patch, you as a module builder dont have to use patch171.hak in your module. Its optional to do and it will work without it.

If you do it, then player will have to get patch 1.71 from internet and install it to login into your server. If you dont then player will be able to play with 1.69 - all you have to do is to recommend him to get 1.71 since your module is using it.

I think the concept of auto installing required files is the future for Neverwinter Nights. Imagine a client similar to the Neverrun Client that not only captures all available (subscribed?) PWs as well as any modules installed locally, but is also able to display all modules uploaded to the Vault. A player may browse those (currently uninstalled) Vault modules and if they wish to play one they simply click the "play" button and the Client fetches and installs any required files not already on the client machine.

That would be awesome.

Pain of Dungeon Eternal had a vision for this in NWN1, but got too busy with real life. It was going to be part of his neverlauncher which I believe you can still download. At this point if anything was to be done like this it would probably be better to integrate with NWNCX and got some people to port NWNCX to all clients.

The best would be if GOG added CEP and CPP into extras for download. As GOG is currently most used way to get and install NWN.

but thats another problem, you have to download nwncx and not only that you need to run game via nwncx_launcher.exe

NWNCX is not standardized, actually nothing is standardized and thats the problem with this community it wont accept thoughts like this everyone is playing on his own ground thinking he got the best way to do things and thus will never support another approaches.

as an example, there are numerous automatic download tools for NWN PWs, only one is public and that one is for nwn2 (with nwn1 support)
