Windows 7 -- Gamersgate eDownload
« on: May 28, 2013, 01:24:08 am »

I'm trying to download and install Diamond edition from GamersGate to a
Win7 64 machine.  I run the download/install as admin but it goes
straight from 'starting neverwinter nights diamond installer" to crash
with blank pop-up that has nothing on it but an ok button.  I wiped
everything and tried again...same thing.

I had this up and running, on this machine, a little over 9 months ago.  I've since done a hard drive wipe and only now tried to download and reinstall NWN1.

The only thing GamersGate says is that this game is not supported by Windows7, too bad, even though I had a previous install working just fine.

Solutions?

Well I don't know gamersgate which leads me to wonder why you didn't get your copy from
GOG.com instead.

Anyhow, an important note to consider, WIN7 much like VISTA, you have to give every possible
executable that is not "Signed By Microsoft" to run as Administrator.

See, often an Executable might start up other executable(s) that came with it and that is where
some issues may arise if you only give that first executable the "Run as Administrator" feature, it still might not work correctly or at all if it starts up other Executable(s) which do not have that
feature checked for them.

I apologize, if that seems confusing and complicated, but that might be your issue(s)

Also, don't install in --> "C:\\Program Files\\nwn\\" go with --> "C:\\NWN\\" instead.

Either way, Gamersgate is telling me to contact Bioware for assistance now.  A couple days ago they said they received an updated download from them that would probably resolve the issue, it did not.  I find this odd because I thought Bioware wasn't doing anything with this game any more. ( A pity, given the garbage that is Neverwinter over with those other devs. )

When I told Gamersgate as much, I got this:

Really? I was not aware of that.

Try the publisher then:

But ya, I tried it all as admin, but as soon as the download jumps to the install it crashes to the blank pop-up.

As I said, it worked fine...same Gamersgate file and all...a year or two ago.  On the same machine.  I have no idea what GOG is, even my Dragon Ages are from Gamersgate.  No issues ( until now ) with quick customer service in the rare instance it's needed.  Usually it's only EA that results in no fix, if you even get a response at all.

Well you see that's the thing, according to what you are saying --> "the download jumps to the nwn installer" this suggest that you're downloading and once the download is over the "gamergate" download utility switches to the NWN install which also suggest you never had a chance to tag
the NWN install to "Run as Administrator".

Another option if possible, is to install and update NWN with the critical patch on another system
that runs Windows XP. Once you've done that, you can just copy the content of the NWN folder
from that machine to your Win7 machine and once you've done that, you start "nwn.exe", you run the "Configuration"
util by clicking the "Configure" button on the NWN launcher menu and clicking the "Change" button
on the next window and then clicking the "Scan" button. WIth that you should be good to go.

I hardly dare to suggest it: Disabling User Account Control temporarily might help.

Other than that, the downloaded files should to be somewhere on your machine I think. Perhaps the gamergate downloader doesn't even delete them, if the installation fails. Might be worth it to look around in the Windows temp folder.
