Setting Up and Connecting to a Server
« on: May 23, 2013, 03:34:16 am »

I'm having trouble setting up and connecting to a server. A friend and I are planning on doing some multiplayer, and we've both got Diamond Edition with all the updates from the ARF2 application, including the critcal build version of patch 1.69, etc.

My question is basically: what is the easiest way to set up a server for Neverwinter Nights? I am going to be running the server and playing the game on the same computer, if that makes a difference. Are there any fairly updated guides I could follow? All the ones I have found are out of date.

Thanks in advance for any help!

What have you done so far as far as setting it up?  Port forwarding, router setup, server settings, etc...

Setting up a server for the public can be tricky, but if you only want this other friend to direct-connect to your server, then it's probably a bit easier.

Not sure if you can run the server application on your machine and log in as a player at the same time, but I might be wrong.

I fixed the problem I was having. It turned out the issue was totally a port forwarding problem. I had forwarded the ports, had a static IP, but on my particular router it asks for the last digits of the new IP address, and those were wrong. Got it all figured out and it works great. Just used the method that comes built in to the game and had my friend Direct Connect to my IP.

As for the server application, from the description I would assume you could play on the same machine, but I could be wrong. I was getting close to trying it before the direct connect solution worked out.

Thanks for the reply! I'm thinking about posting an in-depth bit about getting it up and running from purchase to port forwarding to playing, since a lot of the links I found were to the old legacy forums (and therefore didn't work) or were to somewhat outdated info. Does something like that already exist, and therefore me doing it would be redundant?

Yes, you can run the server application and log into it as a player or DM on the same machine at the same time.

               Very strange.

So my friend and I were going to log in and play on the server. This was going to be the first time since our first session when I started up the game. I made a new game, got my new character to the same point (I wanted to re-roll), and my friend can't join the game. I tested with another game to make sure it wasn't a magical port problem, and she connected just fine. What gives?

Any ideas?

P.S all the server settings, password, etc. are the same.
