Widows XP and AMD Radeon 6850 driver problem.
« on: October 21, 2012, 09:38:09 pm »

               My specs:
Windows XP Home 32 SP3
AMD Radeon HD 6850 (Dx9)

So, when I run the game
on the old drivers from 2010 everything works fine. After updating my
drivers to the newest version (8.982.0.0) I get the ntdll.dll error when
I start the game normally and the atioglxx.dll error when I try to
start by nwnmain.exe. I took the atioglxx.dll file from my old 2010
driver and put it in my NWN folder. When I try to run the game that way
my computer keeps restarting. I also tried many other atioglxx.dll files
that I had downloaded but they didn't work. The atioglxx.dll file I'm
currently using is 6.14.10.11762. My old 2010 driver atioglxx.dll file
is 6.14.10.10362.

Please don't send me any links to other topics like this one, I've read them all and didn't find the answer.

Thanks for help.

You are complaining about a game that is approaching ten years of age.  If it doesn't like your new driver, that's just the way it's going to be.  You either use the driver that actually works, or you don't play the game.

Seems simple enough.

Catalyst w/11-04 for AMD 32-bit systems seems to work reliably, though you probably already knew that from reading elsewhere.

I'd have to agree with Just-Me on this. Furthermore, not only are you using an outdated OS, you're using it with a GPU designed for a more current OS (e.g. Windows 7).

The other thing you could try is updating DirectX to make sure all those DLLs are current.

The game works, but I get ~3 fps with 11.4

I guess you're right. It makes me sad when I think that sooner or later I won't be able to play my favorite RPG games like NWN or NWN2. It's such a shame that NWN franchise is dead '<img'>.

I have too much stuff and too little space already.  I do still have older PCs with older hardware that will play these old games just the way that they were designed, but in order to do so, I must take a newer PC out of service and swap it with the old PC that has to be stored in its carton on a strong commercial shelving unit (has to be sturdy, with several PCs on it / in it), so I must be very anxious to play the older game before I will take that step.

Incidentally, IMO, it isn't Bioware who killed off NWN, so much as it is / was the current owners of the AD&D licences, Wizards of the (California Wierdos) who have so warped that system that it isn't recognizable any more.  I followed the old TSR progress from not long after its early beginnings, and didn't always agree with what Gygax was doing with it, but it was always a fun gaming world.
