Win7 compatibility mode vs xp mode.
« on: November 07, 2011, 12:24:03 pm »

Wondering if anybody has any experience using xp mode(win7 pro or ultimate) to play older older games( like nwn1 & 2). Getting a new pc and I am willing to spend a little more if having an os with xp mode is a more hassle free way to play these games.

I think all win7 systems have XP mode...?

Anyway...I noticed I can run NWN fine without using XP mode...so...

(I have a new win7 computer btw...)

Thanks for the reply. As far as I know, only win7 pro and ultimate have xp mode. They all have compatibility mode. I was mostly curious about the xp mode. I think it is a liscensed virtual copy of xp on your computer. If anyone is still looking, any issue with multi core and these games? Also, I guess you would say do not waste the money on the os.

NWN works fine on my machine (Win7 x64) without any virtualization or compatibility mode.

               Same here

Windows 7 x64 - 8GB Ram, 1 GB nVidia GeForce gtx 460 SE Graphics Card, AMD X4 Phenom 3.4 Quad Core Processor.

However, dispite all these powerful components - there are moments of slowdown or stutteryness in nwn.
I think its just nwn showing its age, and not being 100% capable of utilizing the new technology.

NWN was written/designed to work under Windows 98 and Direct X 9.  It was slightly patched to enable it to work under later operating systems, but never upgraded beyond the capabilities of Windows 98 and Direct X 9,  It will STILL run under those conditions.    It only works with a single core, regardless of however many cores you may have.  It only uses a max of 64 meg of cache ram, and that only if you tell it to use that much by editing the nwn.ini etc.

So, yes, it is an OLD game, but one that has been added to by the community to improve the looks via graphics updates.  It is too bad that the engine can't be patched to use the power of the newer graphics cards, Direct X 11 and beyond etc...

NWN is what it is, a great game written for an OLD computer system.

None of you experience slight freezes whenever creatures are spawned?

Uh... my previous post disappeared... well, do any of you experience slight game-freezes whenever creatures are spawned (windows 7 without xp mode)?
