Loathing Linux

               Yeah, it seems to hate me just as much. Random errors even on a fresh install. Is it any harder to install a server on windows? I find it hard to believe but figured I'd ask to see if there's any issues with using Windows instead. Btw, we use NWNx2.

               Something's up because I did 3 linux installs a few weeks ago and they work flawlessly.  Two of them were on different model netbooks (EEEpc & Toshiba) and one was on a Toshiba laptop.  They all work flawlessly.  I don't know about the server though.  BTW, I installed them under Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty Narwhal).

               Sorry, Jenna, but Linux does not tend to hate anyone - it is just not forgiving about configuration errors and it depends on properly working hardware more than Windows seems to do. If the errors you get are really random, not determinable errors, than there might be some hardware problem like memory chips not working reliable any more or a hard disk close to a breakdown. If this is still the old system that stood around for three years unused, this could well be possible.

Linux can be used on very old hardware if needed - in a way an up to date Windows never could - but the hardware itself must be error free.

That said, perhaps you can give more detail about your issues with your Linux system.

               I found a few guys who are really good at linux to help out... one of the problems also seemed to be that it won't let me use the number pad to enter a password... so nothing was wrong with our root user info, just that bizarre quirk. -.-

               We (Avlis) run nine NWN instances for historical reasons.  Experience has taught me that NWN behaves best when it has the machine to itself.  The Microsoft tax alone would kill us (US$900).  Every iteration of Windows forces a GUI on you that sucks down CPU cycles better spent keeping the NWN VM afloat.  I can administer the instances via ssh without needing a graphical remote desktop client (very painful on my phone).
