Cannot install NwN via disc
« Reply #15 on: August 28, 2011, 08:20:54 pm »

Well that's why I did some research and tested a bunch of things. Everything installs fine other than NwN, which there's something different about the format in the way everything was compressed in InstallShield. Which that I'm not sure how to fix. It's not a disc error because the drives are working properly like I said in the first post. "I tried updating Windows Installer, my DVD/CD-RW drive, switching the disc drives to one that I know for sure works, nothing. The only disc out of my many many discs, NwN isn't read or recognized and I can't figure out why." It could be InstallShield registries as well, though I don't know much about those.

And LordSullivan, it's not the optics because I've had installed NwN on this laptop with the same setup before, no issues. This is a freak occurrence. It sounds more software related than hardware the more I think about it and troubleshoot the system.

Everytime I've seen someone with this problem, it has been a registry issue. Unistall NWN and then do a search for any files with NWN in their names. If you let your computer do a thorough search, I bet you'll find at least one old and hidden registry. Delete it and reinstall.

Clean installation of Windows as well as a new partition created. It's not installed via disc. When it's a clean installation, even registry wise, and hen you delete a partition, all data (including all registries) on that deleted partition or logical drive is lost according to Windows. So there weren't any registries from the clean registration being the fact that since this deletion of the partition/and reformatting, NwN has not been installed via disc at all, so there won't be any registries unless you copy the files over from another computer's directory. Safe to say, from the hoops I had to jump through to get the OS stable, this doesn't work for the issue I'm having. Thanks for the suggestion though!

If you have it installed on a laptop already, have you tried just copying it from your laptop directly onto your PC using a direct cable?

Based on this statement I would lean towards a hardware related issue like say memory or something else causing a hang at that point in the installation. Barring that I would check windows updates and see if you have the latest installer version, its a long shot but who knows if there is any association with the NWN installer and windows installer. Logic would say no because NWN has been out for 10 years and worked with windows 98 installers but who knows, Windows updates could have screwed something up just as Nvidia drivers did for over a year while the finger pointing went on about who's fault it was before they addressed the issue.

Pop the memory out and blow out the slots with some canned air. If you have multiple modules try installing NWN with one in place, if that doesn't work try putting only the other one in and installing again. Make sure after each install fails you check to see if an NWN folder has been created, if it has delete it and any other traces of NWN on your computer.

As far as no registry entries, it is entirely feasible there are registry entries if the install got to that point before locking up. Again, check the whole computer for NWN entries and delete before reinstalling.

Here a little trick I did with a friends computer who did not even have CD/dvd drive. Hook up to network with the friend or other computer go in and have the computer who drive works and share that drive. The computer that cannot use a disk drive goes to their shared D drive and install through the network. Hope that might help, since I just glanced at the topic.

It's my laptop that it won't install on and that's how it got on my laptop, it doesn't solve the issue with the CD Drive which if it's doing it with NwN, it's bound to do it with another disc and I don't want to jump through 30 hoops every time I want to install something that's similar to NwN. The issue is installing the game via CD and the CD's fine as I've stated in other posts that I've installed during this whole ordeal on other PCs as I've stated in earlier posts.

Bridman076: (Edit) Nothing in Windows Update of an Update of installer versions. I can try again though.

ShadowM: That doesn't solve the issue of installation wizards not working and it doesn't work being the fact that it's something to do with the software. Anytime when I click the autorun, no install or exit buttons. (That's not a hardware issue, that's software) Anytime I click on the setup, the same dialog box with Information, the ok button, and nothing else. So my deduction is InstallShield, but how to fix that I'm not sure.

General: f anyone has any ideas of what I can do with InstallShield please let me know. This problem is becoming more than just a headache.<><>

I never got the windows installer update via windows updates, it always popped up on some game or program install saying I needed the latest windows installer in order to proceed and then linked me to a microshaft page to download and install it.

As I said it is a long shot, but hey it may help.
