Biggest question, are you going to use the machine for anything besides NWN?

As for win 7 vs XP, I'd say 7 all the way, just a nicer UI.  That said, if you're just using it for NWN, you'll want a system designed around working with that sort of platform.  Win 7 causes various issues with NWN, and graphics cards are even more problematic.

Since you already have a Windows XP disk with (Product Key?)

I suggest for you to purchase new parts of previous gen hardware still available.

Example:

1- a MATX [Intel G41 socket 775] motherbord
2- a Socket 775 Intel Pentium E6500/E6600/E6700 CPU
3- 2GB of DDR2 OR DDR3 depending on the Motherboard you chose
4- A Western Digital "Black Series" SATA 2 Harddrive of the size you prefer
5- A 450W Power supply with around [30 Amps on the 12 volts rail] or around that combined if (2x 12 volts rails) - minimum
6- any decent DVD-RW sata2 optical drive
7- a Computer Case of your choise
8- GRAPHIC CARD: Either NEW Nvidia 9800 GT or any PCI-E x16 performance used card
(Best bet --> No ATI since HD series and NO Nvidia since GF 400 series)

Total Before Tax - -> $469.92 USD ($55.00 Computer Case Included) - More or less some shiping fees.

That should get you a decent inexpensive great performance system that will last you quite
sometime yet.

Nice components.  As I said if it's only for nwn, he might be better off with the 3.6 GHZ Cedar hill processor for half that price.  Really is dependant on what the plans are for the computer besides NWN.

I'm aware the FSB is much slower on that processor, but that might not matter so much if it's just more or less an old server box that gets occasional use.

Well, I surely understand your point of view, however I can't help it, I'm a practical thinker in general so I'm
thinking if in the near future the use of the second computer changes and he ends up installing WIN7
then he'll still have decent power for more recent things.

And yeah, he should maybe give a hint on what are his intentions with the system? '<img'>

After installing the latest nvidia drivers NWN works even better (more FPS).

Didn't have any problems with NWN and the toolset....even though I was well aware of how to make the installation and other.
