[Windows] Game Freezes with Healthy graphics card.
« on: May 05, 2011, 01:23:33 am »

Well, I have two of the same cards, one card was literally dying and one is healthy. The unhealthy card actually ran the game with no issues besides the choppy frame rate and freezes when the game is going at optimal speed. I got myself the same graphics card to replace the the unhealthy card and the game runs only smoothly, but the freezing still occurs when loading in very specific characters from what I observed (freezes at the same location all the time, sometimes by opening a door with a particular set of people inside).

Any suggestions as to fix this problem?

How many OLDER Geforce drivers have you tested?  It's a really old card, true, but in this game, old is usually better, at least up to a point, and that is particularly true for the drivers.

Video Card Driver Version: Latest

is probably going to be of little value in diagnosing the problem.

Question 1: are you using the same driver with the healthy card as you did with the dying card?  Are the settings the same?
Question 2: Is this a single or dual core rig?

Yes, they use the same nVidia driver. The settings are the exact same except my unhealthy card would run at 121 C (it's freaking hot). So, it would slow down the game to a choppy but runnable status. However, when the game decides to run at a smooth frame rate, it freezes even on the unhealthy card.

I'm thinking that the issue is either the graphics card is loading far too fast or there card is running more frames than it should. Each time the game freezes, it is trying to load a character, after all.

How about actually listing the driver version?

Click on Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> System --> Hardware tab --> Device Manager  --> Display Adapters --> Open list , choose applicable card model, Rclick for --> Properties --> Driver tab --> revise your original posted specs to reflect the version number you read here... please

There are a few discussions on the legacy forum by owners of the card you are using. Check them.

here and
here.

If you are running multiple cores, there are a myriad of settings which can be modified to affect the FPS and general performance.  However, since you have not indicated this is the case on your rig I'll assume you don't need any linkage to resolving that issue.

That should help diagnosis a bit more.  Good.

Now about this freezing...

How long does the freeze last?  I also experience occasional short (a few secs) freezes when encountering certain triggers, but it appears to be limited only to specific modules so I am assuming it is less-than-optimum scripting at work in those cases.

So, does this freezing occur when you play all modules or only certain ones?

For those modules where it does occur, does it occur in all areas or only specific ones?

Does it occur both with SP modules or also with LAN games and/or PWs?

Do you have any overrides and/or haks installed?

The freezing is indefinite, the music and background continue to play normally but the picture freezes (mouse is still able to move). Nothing cn be clicked and the only way out of the program is through ctrl+alt+del.

The freezing is not limited to one module, it has occurred in the official campaign as well.

I have noticed that every time the game freezes indefinitely a monster, person, or something not related to the environment was loading in. At times, it would freeze the instant I logged into a module that spawned random NPCs. It is not limited to random NPCs since it froze during the OC Prologue/Tutorial as well.

I have no overrides at the moment.

I do have a few haks, but the problem has occurred far before the haks were in place (when the card was still unhealthy).
