Unable to load a saved game
« on: April 17, 2011, 05:43:45 am »

After I first installed NWN: Platinum, I would go through the game and save it every so often, but when I would try to open the game again and load the game, my saved games weren't available.  I also saved my characters, but they weren't available either.  It was as if I'd never played the game every on my computer.  I reinstalled the game and tested it out: I started and saved my game, then I quit and came back in and my game was there, ready for me to play right where I left off!

However, once I got past the Prelude, I saved again and had to leave my computer so I turned it off, confident that I could start again where I left off, but when I came back and fired up the game, my saved game showed up in the list on the left, but the thumbnail on the right was pure white, which I thought odd.  Of course that didn't deter me.  I tried to load the game, but I got an error saying that the module didn't exist, was corrupt, or was saved in a newer module than what was actually installed on my computer.  This is very frustrating because I REALLY don't want to have to keep going through the tutorial over and over and over again and not make any progress in the game.  So far, I've never been out of the Academy!

Please help, if you can.  I would greatly appreciate any tips that anyone can give me, especially if someone has had this issue in the past.

For some reason, the game is not writing out files correctly. That much is obvious... so why?

Corrupt module?  Inproper installation?  Cabling from disc drive?  Corrupt dynamic game exe?

If all saves are corrupted, I would first try playing/saving another module.  Even try to make a tiny one with the toolset and try saving that one.  It's possible the OC module itself was corrupted during installation.

If all modules tried exhibit the same save idiosyncrasy, I would install yet a third time (I've read about folks needing several attempts before it installed properly, though extremely rare) and then immediately patch to v1.69.  Why?  The game will run from the HD rather than the disc drive so this would help to check if the drive itself or the disc is causing the read error.

If it still makes corrupt saves after patched, I am at a loss.  Only a bad installation of the base NWN exe would cause the consistent save problem IMO and that may mean the installation disc itself is no longer pristine or a bad sector exists on the HD (might not be a bad idea to do a full repair scan and defrag at this time). I suppose you could try cleaning the disc(s) as a last resort, though that won't help much if the optical surface has been physically marred.

Let's see if anyone else in the community has experienced this.  I have never read about a condition where the save process itself is corrupt, but it may have happened.  Random corrupt saves can occasionally occur and is not a total oddity as your description.

Since there saved game worked while they where in the prelude but did not work after going into chapter 1. It could be a problem with the codeword not getting written to the .ini file.

Do you have the game installed to the x86 folder?  If you do you may want to try installing it to a location outside of the programs folder, Like C:\\NeverwinterNights.
