I need help with hosting problem, please..

               I need help with a problem I am having when I try to host,my server shows up in the list of servers, so I know it has nothing to do with opening ports or anything, but when I host, and anyone tries to join it, or direct connect to it they cannot, and I can only direct connect to it, and I cannot join it from the list of servers either.. The message that im getting is saying connection to server has failed (timed out).. Im not really sure of what to doo. Im running windows vista on my computer, no sure if that has anything to do with it, but i need help, please..

               Weird ,I cant see a server that other people can and I have vista ..wonder if its a vista thing?

Maybe your router is filtering the incoming conections, I mean that when somebody tries to connect to you from internet, the router receives the connection. Most of routers have that thing for protecting you of possible hackers.

For disable it, you must enter in the router's config and redirect the incoming traffic to you (normally that option is called "DMZ").

Have you thought about a putting your mod on a virtual machine?

               Enter in the router's config*, search for DMZ (demilitarized zone) and then enter there your LAN ip to redirect all the incoming traffic to you

That would be really dangerous and unnecessary. It is sufficient to forward port 5120 to 5129 (so that there are enough ports for several connections) to the computer nwserver is running on.

If you have a router with port filter, you should never switch the filter off if you are not exactly know what you are doing!

               As I said earlier, It prevents some hacker attacks (if you have already a trojan in your system that uses a specific port for example), but the protection is almost ridiculous. The probabilities of a hacker attack are almost null and if someone wants to attack you, he will find the way to do that. Hackers start with a port scan so even if you have only 1 port open he will be able to attack you.

The critical ports of your system are protected with windows' firewall (unless you have a trojan, it could open the ports).

 If you use the dmz the only thing that you are doing is to prevent future problems with everything that needs a incoming connection.

The only effective way to protect yourself is with a firewall (and an antivirus of course) in your computer and monitorize all the trafic from time to time.

I date to contradict that! Software firewalls are fallible as any piece of software is - there are enough trojans and viruses out there that can disable your software firewall. On the other hand, a software firewall is a very complex modification of your system and IMHO creates more issues than it solves - YMMV. A virus scanner is a good thing, but if you use it, you have to make sure that the signature file is always up to date - otherwise it's a false feeling of security.

BTW, I don't have a windows firewall - and if I had, I would not activate it, instead, I would disable any services that I don't need, as I do on my Linux box, and those I do need I would configure in a way they don't open ports to the www.

Finally, a hardware firewall that protects your local net is always preferable to a software firewall. And a router with packet filtering mechanism is such a firewall - or at least an important part of a firewall.

               Of course, nothing is infallible. Like you said viruses can disable it, but for that, they must enter your system before and if you have an antivirus and a good firewall that won't happen.
 
 For the complex thing... you have a lot of friendly firewalls (like agnitum outpost for ex.)  that have a database of lots of applications and it autoconfigures itself. Of course sometimes they are a pain in the ass like you say.

 I have windows installed and without antivirus, firewall. etc. Instead of that, I have disabled all the useless and dangerous services but I look from time to time everywhere where the viruses normally act and I'm always alert and if I see a strange behavior in my system, I look for the cause.

 A hardware firewall is very good but not if you fill it with holes (open ports for nwn, emule, bittorrent, etc etc.).

 I agree with you in almost everything, I'm just being practical, it's just 2 different points of view xD

  When I said that thing about dmz, I knew the risks but... what are the possibilities of being attacked by a hacker? we are talking about a private server of an old game not an official server of world of warcraft. I'm sure that he can sacrifice a little security '>

               Open a command line (start button >> execute and write "cmd" without the quotes) and then write there:   ipconfig   and press enter.

By the way... I suposse that your IP is assigned by the router, so it may change someday. If you see that the server has problems again, check it '>
