NVidia GTX 4xx/5xx vs AMD HD 58xx/68xx NWN performance
« on: December 13, 2010, 05:07:23 pm »

I have read all over the place (here included) that NVidia Fermi cards (GTX 460, GTX 580 etc...) have absolutely horrible performance in NWN (frame rates on high end cards typically in the teens).

But I haven't read how AMD newer cards are working (I don't care that shiny water).

Is anyone using an AMD 5850, 6850,6870 etc???

I am just suprised  we are getting so many comments on the new NVidia cards and nothing on the AMD. I am thinking about an upgrade, but I am leaning toward AMD (for triple monitor support), but would like some idea how good/bad NWN performance will be.

TTBOMK, all Radeons and Catalyst Drivers after the X1n00 generation (2006) are commonly much more problematic in the Aurora games (KotOR and NWN) than the pre-Fermi Geforces.

I am not concerned about pre-fermi cards, if I upgrade it will be a to a new card from 2010+. So I may be looking for a lesser of evils. Pre-Fermi results don't necessarily translate.

That means at this point I am looking at known Fermi issues vs unknown AMD issues. I would like a better idea how 58xx-68xx AMD cards are working out. I read somewhere that a 57xx card seemed to be not causing issues.

A friend of mine uses a 5870 card and he says it works great.

Three of my other friends  (One uses a 450, the other a 460, and one a 470) are no longer able to do PvP or go on dungeon raids.

Speaking out of personal experience, I would not buy any of those. Try and find a NVidia 200 series card, preferably on the higher end, a GTX 280 or GTX295. They're still among the best video cards you can buy, and they run both NWN and most of nowadays biggest system-killing games.

You may found those at Ebay or Craig's List, but you're not going to find them anywhere on Newegg or Tiger Direct.

Thanks. I was already intested in AMD for driving 3 monitors (not while gaming), so it is good to find out they don't suffer similar issues to the Fermi cards.

I was dumb to buy a GT430 card because it was the fastest low-form card.'<img'>  I ran into the Fermi problem exactly and now reading about it afterwards on many forums including nVidia's forum, where they officially say that they aren't going to do anything about the problem for months to come. There doesn't seem to be any solution to it but to switch the card, which is not easy because it's a low form case. This and the problem with low-res (below 640x480) games, it seems ATI is now doing a lot better job at backwards compatibility and it'll be my preferred choice in the future.<3>
