I'm a relatively long-time player of Neverwinter Nights. Had it a few years, in fact. For some reason, however, the game absolutely refuses to play with either my Logitech headset or my onboard sound. Fortunately, I have an expansion sound card, but it looks like it's giving up the ghost.

The problem is as follows: when using my Soundblaster card, the game works fine. I rarely use my onboard sound card, so that isn't an issue, but whenever I use either it or my Logitech USB headset (the Clearchat Pro, wired, if it matters), the game doesn't start at all. The loader menu starts up, but when I press "Play" to run nwmain.exe, I see the "eye" icon, then nothing. Nwmain.exe runs in the background, but otherwise there's no activity. The problem persists even when I run with the sound in "Safe Mode," but not when sound is completely disabled.

I have this exact problem with the original Unreal Tournament as well, but most frustrating to me is that games on both other sides of the technological spectrum--Baldur's Gate and Doom 3--work just fine with the headset.

Is there any way to get Neverwinter Nights to work with my USB headset, or am I going to have to hope I can get another sound card, or that the one I have isn't as dead as I thought?

Many thanks in advance, and if you need further information, I'm more than happy to reply in case it can help me out.

I'm only guessing here but it appears some games (like NWN) check the standard ports when they configure the game.  It would be interesting to note how, if at all, the configuration report differs under each of the situations you have described, after re-running the configurator exe.  There may be away to manually adjust that file to coincide with the actual conditions, but unfortunately, I wouldn't know how to do that, never having owned any of the integrated components.. But I know for fact that many of the newer low-cost laptops have gone this route and face similar problems.  Hopefully, this will help steer you closer towards resolution.

This report, by the way, is the same regardless of if I use my Logitech USB headset, my SB Live! card, my C-Media Audio Device (onboard sound), or Virtual Cable 1 (a simulated sound card, which NWN won't load with, either).

In addendum to the above, I removed the nwn.ini file from my game directory, resetting my configuration and causing the config utility to recheck everything. It still does the same thing--loader graphic pops up, then nothing. I've tried disabling all sound devices except the headset with no change, I've tried all the different hardware acceleration settings in Windows... I'm at wit's end here, and if anyone has any other ideas about how to get this to work, please share them. I'm almost about willing to install Linux on here at this point.

Just in case anyone should have the same problem and notice this, I managed to fix it. Neverwinter Nights now works with my USB headset. The solution was found on the old forums. In your NWN directory, there should be a folder called "miles" with a file named either "Mssa3d.m3d" or "Mssa3d2.m3d." Rename them to "<filename>.m3d.old", i.e., "Mssa3d.m3d.old", and it should work just fine. Leastaways, it did for me.

I'm not entirely sure what the problem is here that caused it, I'm just glad this fix I saw for other people with a "runs with sound disabled" problem worked for me. I hope it works for anyone else, too.

Good ferreting.  If possible, could you post the link to the original thread in the legacy forum.  The "whys" and "wherefores" may be illuminating for others.

Gladly. The legacy thread is right here: http://nwn.bioware.c...0&forum=49&sp=0

Be advised, this is a ten page thread, there's a lot of various solutions people have tried with the game. Don't give up and quit halfway just because a few of them don't work--the one that worked for me was all the way on page ten.
