Need Expert advice to make this work
« on: September 28, 2010, 04:49:07 pm »

               I have been away a while from Neverwinter Nights 1. I started the game and got really into it with my rogue and got up to that priest i hated fighting and couldnt beat. What got me out of the game was not that. It was the fact that sometimes out of the blue, the game would crash and give me some weird response. And i would look at my computer page, a gig or memory would be missing. Now thats pretty ****ed up. and even more so from a bioware game since their game's usually are refined. I really want to get this to work since i like this game.

I did a little bit of researching and my computers specs are fine. Everything is in order and should work with the game except...
When they rate the computer, everything got high ratings except for the video. The game ran even a little slow on diablo 2. Thats pretty sad since this computer is a 2008 asus with vista. Now i know that vista is the worst operating system but it should still be able to work since the game is like 6 years older than  my computer. My computer expert friend told me that its the video card as well. I want to know what the problem is. I'm prally not gonna play the game now, but in the future i might.  Its got good megabytes of ram and mhz and the memory is good. I keep saying it and it makes me laugh everytime. Bioware shouldve stuck with the infinity engine. So much betterlooking and performance is top notch. Still, nvn  i like. If anyone has any thoughts on this id be happy.

               The Win7 thread will also work for setting up a vista machine. Also make sure your sound and video drivers are up to date.

               The chronological AGE of any PC is essentially meaningless, because there continues to be a market that wants garbage setups for the lowest possible price, & that segment creates a sickness among both buyers and producers,

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:

    * Windows ME/98 128 MB RAM
    * Windows XP/2000 256 MB RAM
    * 800 MHz or faster Intel Pentium III or AMD Athlon processor
    * 8x CD/DVD-ROM Drive
    * 3.8 GB free hard disk space
    * 32 MB Open GL 1.2 compatible video card with Hardware T&L
    * DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
    * DirectX 8.1 (included)
    * Keyboard, Mouse

Notice the phrase bolded and underlined.  Many older designs of onboard chips barely can handle that requirement, let alone the video graphics speed minimums, but this game doesn;t SUPPORT any onboard chips (no official support was ever available for laptops, but since there now have been seven years of changes, most such now are supposed to meet those old requirements).

    * NVIDIA GeForce4
    * NVIDIA GeForce3
    * NVIDIA GeForce2
    * ATI Radeon 8500
    * ATI Radeon 7500
    * ATI Radeon 7200

So: what video solution and what driver are you trying to use?

               Alright the next question is how do i upgrade my computer. Do i essentially have to pay an arm and a leg to do that, or am i better off just waiting till my next computer. I dont know how any of you guys can deal with this crap all the time. What happened to the old days with win 98 when games would run just fine with little requirements and i could play baldurs gate 2, icewind dale 2, and diablo 2 with little effort. It just seems like its gotten worse...

               No one can answer that with the current information you have offered.  It could be as simple as drivers (free), it could be more.
