Game not working on new PC
« on: September 25, 2010, 12:07:44 pm »

Hi, i have a new pc with win7 32bit and nwn + both EXP and latets updates, it wont work.

I have tried running it in different compability modes but still no diffrence.

When i start the game the first menu comes up with, play, update, config (or something) etc, with sound. So far, everything seems normal. But when i start the game there is no sound and when the in-game main menu comes up the game allways crashes.

I also tried a second game, GTA SA, there was sound and all, but, the graphics was really wierd. The colors for example where a complete mess.

I dont get it. Could it be the drivers?

I really want to start playing this game and would be most thankfull for anyone that helps me solve the problem.

And yes. I have been trying the self-help method but with no result.

Best regards and sorry for bad grammar and spelling.

Hardware: Its pretty good so it cant be that the components are out of date.

You need to list system specs and driver versions.

Full list of PC system specs.  video, cpu, ram, etc.

NWN is a tricky beast, and in some cases very new vid cards have issues.

I can tell you right off the bat that you don't run the nwnlauncher.  Make a shortcut directly to nwnmain.exe, make sure you're running as administrator etc..

Depending on vid card and such you might need to disable movies, change grapics settings, so on and so forth.

The nwconfig.exe should have executed when you installed the game. Check the nwconfig.ini (the output from the exe) to view what NWN is trying to digest.  It's possible it isn't picking up the true system specs for some reason, in which case you may need to make adjustments yourself.

Just for clarification, if you are detailed in listing and your hardware, OS, drivers, etc., the Tech help folk won't be using the information to determine whether your set-up is sufficient to run the game, but rather, to suggest a method to resolve your issue for THAT SPECIFIC CONFIGURATION (there are so many now with the newer 64-bit. dual/quad core systems it has become a vast forest of OS idiosyncrasies).  Among the community here, just about every conceivable configuration has been encountered and addressed, if not in this forum, certainly within the defunct legacy forum.

In your C:\\NeverwinterNights\\NWN folder (I am assuming you installed it here like in Selene's Win7 Tips), open your nwn.ini file and change the line  "DisableSound=0" to "DisableSound=1".

See if that helps.  If not, change it back.

P.S.  Ummm.. you are listing 2 different patches, one for HotU and one for the original game.  Did you run them both?  Also, have you tried to run the game unpatched?  What happens?

First off. I really need to get the latest sound drivers before i do anything else. My google skills arnt good enough, so i hope that someone with better skills then me can find the correct and latest drivers.

Best regards

EDIT; I dont get it. I removed both patches and now the game wont launch at all.

I dont think it could be something with just the NWN-game. Since GTA SA doesnt run properly either, there must be something with the drivers?

That's great news!  Those integrated components can cause problems for a lot of games, old and new alike.

Just for the record, what is the work-around you used? Just disabled sound in the nwn.ini?

Since you have published your full system specs in the thread, others who use a similar configuration will benefit from your experiments and experience.
