Harumph...
So I went through and checked all of my md5s against what was posted; everything was fine.  I went ahead and did the exact same install process on another linux box that was set up almost identically, but had a nvidia card, and no problem with portraits -- must be an intel thing.

I shall continue to hunt for solutions regarding this Intel phenomenon.

Intel graphic chips, intel drivers and the nwn linux client is a neverending story of questionable outcome. There are several issues with intel drivers and several more or less reliable workarounds. You should search the old nwn linux forum for posts regarding intel cards. My best guess: you should install driconf and at least activate the S3TC compression with it. The intel drivers don't activate it by default, that is the reason why the textures of the 1.69 patch are not properly displayed on intel GPUs when linux is the OS. Perhaps this helps with your issues, too.

As to how to install driconf: on debian/ubuntu systems, the way to go is
sudo apt-get install driconf
On SuSE systems, you would use yast, on all others, you have to find out for yourself.''
