I have this same issue but on desktop, I have tried everything that has been suggested here and a dozen other places, I can run NWN windowed only at 800X600 if I change the resolution in nwn.ini it does the same thing as if its not windowed no matter the resolution not windowed my screen is mostly black with the graphics cut off. I have the latest up to date drivers

               I have this same issue.

I have a working NWN install on my home desktop Win7 64bit machine (w dual ATI 58xx in crossfire).
I'm going on a (fairly lengthy) trip, so I copied that to my Win7 32 bit laptop to noodge around in my spare time.

On the laptop (Dell M6500 w/ATI M7820 chipset), I only get 800x600 resolution, no resolution options at all in the drop-down list under nwconfig.  Nwconfig does detect that my desktop res is 1920x1200.  Nwconfig.ini does have 1920x1200 listed as res, but it doesn't affect anything.  Can't change res in the game.  Scanning in Nwconfig doesn't change anything.  Running Test in nwconfig results in an "OpenGL Test Skipped."  No error information in logs.

I've tried: installing DirectX 9.0c.  Updated Catalyst with newest downloaded from ATI.  Blew that away and updated driver only from Dell.  Installed the Catalyst that came from Dell.  No joy in any event.  I guess I'll do a clean install and rebuild and see if it works, but others have reported doing that with no luck.

Googling about, I see this problem reported, with suggestions to enter the res manually in the ini file, or do a clean install and rebuild, or update the drivers, or dink around with the driver settings, always with no result on the part of the OP.  This problem seems to have been reported on both desktops and laptops, but the majority seem to be laptop-related.

Has anyone had any luck yet?

I had the same problem with NWN being stuck in 800x600, with no resolutions listed in the dropdown, and my resolution edits to the ini file being ignored. It turned out my monitor was refreshing at 59 Hz while the ini was specifying 60 Hz. Changing the refresh rate to 59 Hz in the ini file solved the problem, and NWN now seems to be running at the desired 1900x1200 (same as my desktop resolution)

It seems the pattern with this problem is having Windows 7 on a laptop with an ATI Radeon adapter. I was having the same problem with just a small screen in a black box. My screen is only 14 inches so it was unbearably small for me. I tried all the tweaks listed here and looked all over the internet and nothing seemed to work. I finally stumbled on a fix for my situation and it actually turned out to be simple.

Here was my fix:
My video card is ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
I updated the driver which put me at driver version 8.770.2.1000 driver date 9/19/2010
I started up NWN and it still played in a small box on a black screen. I checked my video resolution in game and it was set to 800x600. I changed it to 1366 x 768 in the game, which is the max resolution for my laptop and voila', that fixed the problem. It is now playing full screen. So the fix for me was simply updating my driver and increasing my resolution to max in the game. Just posting this in case it helps anyone else who experiences this problem.

I am having this same problem and would greatly appreciate any solutions, it's very irritating and straining on the eyes to have to deal with the small screen resolution.

Exactly the same problem on 2 laptops with ATI 6400 &  ATI 5450. Probably the issue comes from the drivers : when booting Win7 in safe mode then the game runs at full screen, but of course without sound & slowly. Thus the issue might be solved by installing older drivers, such as in Catalyst suite 10.3 ; haven't tested yet.

It is the drivers. As a workaround I used VMWare to run XP, reinstalled NWN et voilà : full screen is back.

This is my problem, too.  I have an HP laptop with Windows 7, and I don't know anything about what drivers or stuff like that I have, or even how to find out.  I used to run this game on Vista and it displayed fine, but running it on Windows 7 gives me the "black-box syndrome."  I tried manually changing the setting in the .ini file as shown above but it didn't help.  Should it be "AllowWindowedMode=0" and "FullScreen=1" instead?

               Hi All,

I have a special solution for the notebookers, especially for the Intel chipsets. This great game (NWN1) can and do run perfectly on my X61 ThinkPad now :-)

I had it as an installed version on my desktop PC (Windows 7, 64bit, ATi 5450HD), and it was perfect.
The difficulties came when I was trying to move the installed game directory to my notebook.
The game itself was updated to 1.69 prior that.
When I ran it on the ThinkPad, I got the 800x600 box, or full screen with no menu visible.
I ran circles on the forums looking for help, but I didn't find any.

The problem was that the nwconfig couldn't detect the video card correctly - but it is NOT a driver issue in this case. I managed to run it with ONLY the following changes:

- you need to change to your desired resulotion the values of both the nwn.ini and nwconfig.ini
- you need to change the refresh rate ALSO!!! - it was in my case 50 (with 60 in the value I had the problems).

After this on the first run it was fullscreen and 1024x768 :-)))

Hope it helps to you too.

So on the desktop I had 1280 x 1024 resolution and the X61 had only 1024x786.

I forgot to mentoin that after you moved/copied your directory to the notebook, you have to run the updater at least once to restore the version information - altough it will fail downloading the update - it doesn't matter.

After this, you should edit the files as stated above. And never run the nwconfig - or do the tricks again by hand after that.

For NVidia users who are wanting to play this game on full screen at a lower resolution and getting the thick black borders and no image stretching, I've found a solution for you (and myself)! This will probably work similarly on AMD (ATi) cards as well, but I don't have access to a system with the Catalyst Control Center to know for sure.

http://i466.photobuc...zpsb5596b0a.jpg
^ Screenshot. '<img'>

-Open your NVidia Control Panel.
-Go to "Adjust desktop size and position".
-Scroll down to "2. Apply the following settings:"
-Ensure you're on the "Scaling" tab (this was the default tab for me).
-Under "Select a scaling mode:" select "Aspect Ratio".
-Check the box next to "Override the scaling mode set by games and programs".

Enjoy playing NWN at FULL screen without those annoying black borders (and no eye strain trying to read tiny text)! If someone has a similar solution for the Catalyst Control Center for AMD (ATi) cards, post it to help others out!
