I am a bit confused. What do overrides do, and what should I be cautious or aware of when using overrides?

It all depends on how you are using them and exactly what they are overwriting.


 


If you are creating a module to share with others, then you really should just use haks. Many popular overrides exist in a hak form already and if they don't, its fairly easy to turn them into haks.


 


If your desire is to enhance things in a stand alone module, including the OCs, then overrides for most creatures and tilesets should be fine. If however you also play on PWs, overrides may or may not be a good thing. While some appearance changes might make most of the game seem better, often it can skew what the original builders designed around and actually detract from the "feel". Overrides that expand on feats, domains, skills, classes and other mechanics can also cause glitches when you create characters. Using an override for "heads" could have you creating a PC on a PW and choosing a head during PC creation that once IG others either cannot see or see a different version. Most PWs have extensive character customization available after you enter anyhow and a lot of the older head, hands and feet, and other overrides are redundant anyhow.


 


It really all depends on whether you are playing on a PW or just playing solo modules.

Playing single player modules with overrides is usually OK, but, even there, mods that change the game logic can cause problems.


 


As a rule of thumb, if you hit a problem while playing a module, remove all overrides. If the problem persists, post a query on the module page on the vault.

The other thing about overrides is that they can provide their benefit without being packaged in a 'required' hak.


 


Eg: Tilesets.


If you have the content of a hak file (tileset) unpacked into override - you can then use/view that tileset without having a qualified reference to the hak in the module.


 


In a PW Server, this allows for 'optional' content.


Eg: Content that will not prevent people joining your server, but could potentially cause issues if they try to view it.


 


(It can crash the client if they try to enter an area with the new tilesets if they dont have them (you handle that via nwscript)


Other things like music can be made into optional music by moving them to music folder and adding the 2da entries into override.)

I host multiplayer mods for a group and a few of the potential modules I am considering for future sessions have overrides. Thus, I am concerned what effect they may have not only on the client side when the players join and play the game, but what effect the overrides might have on other modules in my library.  


Currently I am seeing 11 different files with extensions of itp, tga and dds in my Override folder, and I have no idea what they are or even where they came from. I am not experiencing any noticeably negative effects from them, but then, I am not entirely sure I would even recognize any effect, negative or otherwise. I don't know how to open them to find out what they are, what they do or where they came from.

Even popular overrides can cause problems in sp games if they clutter up (Yes I am thinking NWNCQ here) what were empty areas when the mod was designed and built. What happens is that items left on the ground disappear.
