Do you make your own sounds?
« on: June 12, 2012, 12:07:56 am »

Im quite fond of posting my development progress and ideas on Twitter @LordBaaleos

I am following a Diablo Theme in my Worlds of Rhun Mod
I have already provided Andariel as a Boss for the players to fight, and capture (in soul stones)

Now I am developing Duriels Place.
This video showcases the music I am using 'Caves- From Diablo 1', as well as Some Biological Sounding Ambient Noises I made with my voice and Phone.

I literally just made funny noises into my phone, an e-mailed them to me, and then put them into override Directory and - bam.... available in toolset.
The good thing about sounds - is that they are all optional - if a player doesnt have them, they can still get in, if they do have them, they get the full feel of the area.

Had kind of a synth feel.  By the end of the video I was waiting for facehuggers to pop out of those eggs!

We have long planned to do new voice sets, and possibly some additional 'monster sounds' but that is left for the last of the tasks (so we know what we need exactly before we start recording). I've got an old friend who was one of the first sound engineers in the games industry; we've done games before so have a good rapport. I'm looking forward to actually getting to the point where we record, but for now, head down and shoulder to the wheel.

I made some sounds for earlier works, but nothing in NWN.

I came to NWN so I wouldn't have to create CC for my game while still working solo. Making my own sound effects and graphic content in addition to all the coding and game design... woah... that is more than I can take on.

You people never cease to amaze me.

By the way, Ehye, are you friends with Bushnell and/or Alcorn? All silliness aside I'm having trouble parsing your statement about your friend being one of the earliest sound designers in video games. Video games date back to before 1972, but I assume you mean someone from twenty years later in that line of work not forty years ago.

LOL, no not Bushnell nor Alcom. Clarification - COMPUTER/PC (video) games. I started work in the industry in the mid-1980's as did my friend. He's done many of the early D&D titles too (some of you might recall "Menzoberranzan" for example, that's his work (I stepped in to do some voice acting when they asked, me being a known DM from a decade of gaming at that time - one who did a lot of in character voices in my regular games); he did soundtracks but also sound effects back in those days. Amazing talent that fellow. He and I date back to what we call the 'Jurassic Era of Computer Gaming'. Ah the clunky old days of gaming when we had to carve our own polyhedrons from stone - well, OK, it was not QUITE that bad. '<img'>
