Character changes not saved?
« on: December 13, 2011, 05:44:46 am »

               Hello again,

Here's another strange situation I'm having:

When running a particular module of mine on the Dedicated Server 1.69, I've noticed that nothing now seems to get saved to the character .bic file upon player logoff -- no changes in xp, gold, items, costume changes, etc.  I could play a character for half an hour, log off, and then log right back on, only to find the character exactly as he was when I first logged on -- all changes are missing as if they never happened.

Checking the server vault folder, I was also surprised to find duplicate (Mage1.bic, Mage2.bic, etc.) character files for every time I logged off, rather than a single updated save of the character file.  I tested characters on two computers, both with identical results.

I downloaded a clean copy of the Dedicated Server and ran it from there, but the same thing happened.

Thought the .bic files might have accidentally become "Read Only," but no.

Tested another module of mine with the same Dedicated Server, and it works perfectly -- all changes are saved.

Could there be something the matter with the first module itself that would cause this?

Thank you.

It sounds like you were using Local Vault Characters and not Server Vault ones. If your PC name was "Mage", then "Mage1" is a valid save, "Mage2" is also ... and so on. Make certain your Local Vault option is turned off maybe.

               Thanks for the suggestion, Kalbaern.

I tend to run into bizarre situations with computers and software in general, usually in the form of stuff working and then going bonkers... only to work again at some later point, often with seemingly no real adjustment on my end.

In this particular case, the cause of the problem was the very first thing I thought of... eventually.  My first instinct, when I saw that the server vault kept accumulating new, numbered versions of character .bic files was that the originals weren't getting saved over to the most current save, but duplicated due to being read-only.  But when I checked them the first time, they weren't marked as such.

I re-installed the Dedicated Server in a different place, and copied the .bic files into the new server vault inside.  Found out that they "became" read-only, and when I unchecked that box for each one, lo and behold, it was back to normal and each file would be saved over itself and updated to reflect any changes at log-off.  Go figure.
