Toolset Shutting Down
« on: July 11, 2011, 04:47:22 pm »

I'm not sure if it's related, but on start up I get a message that the program registry key can't be found. Pressing okay means the program loads as usual, but then certain modules crash on open that didn't before, and others crash at random times while working in them. The crash is an 'access violation' and apparently happens during a build test now too. I have no idea why there's any problem, I installed NWN the same way I always had before, which worked for years.... and on the same computer with a new installation of windows.

Are you using "new" hak sets? or newer hak set material added to your existing haks?  Access violation errors usualy come up when haked material is broken, missing or just plain screwed. Did you add haked material, then remove it? that can cause violation errors faster than anything.

Just a shot in the dark here, but do you by any chance have UAC - User Account Control - turned on for Windows 7. If you had it on when you installed NWN, its quite possible that it corrupted your installation - which would explain the registry key error you are receiving.

My advice - assuming UAC was on - uninstall NWN, run a regisrty cleaner, turn off UAC, then reinstall NWN.

I just added some of the PRC work to the modules, that's it. I'll give a try reinstalling, pretty sure windows was still on default settings when I installed NWN.

Nope, didn't fix it. My method for installing nwn for the last few years has been to copy paste over the folder, though. And the copy on this computer was working fine (although with the registry warning) until a few days ago.

I did this, adding bioware to the registry.. so I don't get any pop up errors about that on starting the program, but it still crashes on loading modules.

As far as I know it doesn't... but I haven't worked in a non-haked module for any length of time.

I haven't seen a pattern I recognize yet. It won't open our module from before I added the PRC... but it will open the PRC modules, but then sometimes it crashes randomly while I'm working in those too. The exact error is: Access violation at address 0040BD05 in the module nwntoolset.exe. Read of address 000000030.

I suggest opening a non haked mod, the OC for example, and playing around. IF the problem doesn't appear, its a hak issue. If it does, it is an install issue with Win. My guess, is you have a hak issue with the PRC, and CEP not playing nice, and have corrupted your mod. If that is indead what has happened, there is good news, you can recover the mod, but its going to take some work, and hoop jumping to get it back.

But when I download an old copy of the mod off the server and try to open it in the toolset, the error still happens.

1st try the toolset with a hakless mod.
2nd make sure your using a clean override folder. (the PRC ((I am not really familiar with it)) may use override files).
3rd. retrace how this error/s started. was this a new install of NWN, or a old install, with new CC? If old install the problem is in the CC. If a new install, then it may be in the install itself.

I got the idea from another thread: tools-option- turn off the backup conversation files.
My toolset hasn't crashed since i did this.

try checkdisk & defrag just to make sure the disk is ok
might want to go to windows update and do the custom scan as well to make sure your OS and drivers are all up to date.

then try running the critical updater patch, especially if you installed NWN by copying the folder.
if you're on a multicore PC there is an ini setting for the toolset you can try playing with.
try running it in XP compatibility mode.
