I have really gotten into some of the modules offered in the vault! I downloaded 2 or three that have what seems to be common files...until I check my directory! My version (nwn deluxe (1 disc) w/1.69 patch added) does not have talk, portrait or music files and possibly more. the instructions say add them so...I add a new file with the appropriate name (my version uses full words not abbreviated) and put the various sub files from the mods inside. When attempting to load the module I get a message saying a .tlk file is not found check download. I know its in the talk file (created by me) but for some reason its not recognized when loading the mod. Ideas...anyone. My other modules run fine just a couple with these extra files that I had to build a home for. Oh, yes they are with my other nwn folders.

You have to be a little more specific than this. What are the missing tlk files? Did you place the files in the correct sub-directory of your NWN installation (tlk for tlk files)?.

What do you mean when you say you created a talk file?

- Make sure you didn't accidentally add a space or something to the end of the new folders names.

- Rename them as insurance.

- Use all lowercase letters to name them.

- Some downloads may need extracted due to being compressed or zipped. I recommend always downloading to your desktop first and checking the file extensions after downloading. Files ending in ".rar", ".zip" or ".7z" all need uncompressed/extracted before being used. Simply uncompress/extract these to your desktop and then drag and drop them into their appropriate folders found within your NWN Main directory. You delete the desktop files afterwards. Many downloads also contain PDFs, Installation Notes, etc... that you may or may not need as well.

If you have issues with just one or two specific modules, make a post with links to where it can be found on NWN Vault (or wherever it is hosted).

Some particularly large hak paks, I'm thinking specifically of CEP here, contain different file types, including tlk, and come packaged as self extractors. If the extention is exe you need to run it and it will exctract the files into the right directory automatically.

can't be much more specific my directory has no talk folder no music folder etc. when reading the install read me with the various modules they recommend making one in the nwn directory, having done that then adding the unzipped files of equal type (.tlk to talk etc.) they are not recognized when starting the corresponding module.
Kalbaern you see what I mean, I guess... I want to say its hexcoda and descent (D1-D2 pnp) modules moria maybe I have installed so many.
it's just that in the 1 disc version I just bought all the directory or home files in the game install are full words all caps so I named my files the same. should I call them .tlk (creates an error; must have a file for this) talk, Talk or Music msc.,mus. etc. or... I don't know as I have never seen the originals. It is only a deal breaker with the .tlk files as the modules play without custom music and such. I have two modules that have custom talk files and both say custom .tlk missing on start attempt so it must be that my new files are not recognized as I have re downloaded both several times opening the files in two or three places to make sure I see only whats in the zip or rar and install it correctly.
I tried to change the homemade file names with only one staying all lower case (talk) hopefully a good sign I will re install tonight the others reverted to original maybe the game does know what it wants '<img'>
well see.
As a side note .exe type modules ( shadowlords et al, dead gods, cormyrean nights) all install correctly and if they have .tlk files I sure as H*** can't find em! where could they be going I checked override. wish I had more exp. im only 1st or 2nd lvl. windows user '<img'>
thanks for the thought Ill check back either way! oh! what happened to the module vault! hundreds... gone... where....new site? Thank goodness I got Maybe 25 or so before the site changed to, I don't know what it is, some game that is not what we play.

The old Vault is not gone, not yet at least.  Need to do some technical changes to a system file, though, probably easier if you email me and I'll give you directions along with the file to replace (com dot gmail at balkothwarcraft).

And even once that goes down, whenever that is, we have a new Vault that's up and running and gaining content, so all is not lost, I promise.

Regarding your directory, it should look something like this image (I have extra folders but I've highlighted the ones you care about right now):
