Swordflight Chapter Two Released
« on: April 12, 2012, 12:57:25 am »

Swordflight Chapter Two has just been made available on the Vault. Continuing the series begun in the award-winning first chapter , it represents my personal attempt to make an epic fantasy adventure that is intended to capture something of the spirit of such RPG classics as Baldur's Gate. I have also ended up with something that compares well to games like BG in size and scale as well.  With 200+ areas and more than 215000 words of conversational dialogue, it took a lot of time and effort to get this chapter done, and I now understand why official campaign-sized modules are usually made by teams of professionals rather than by one guy in his spare time. Had I been less foolish, I might have figured that out before taking on such a crazy project, but I hope there are still a few NWN players around who will have an interest in taking advantage of my folly. I enjoyed making this module, regardless.

Subsequent chapters in the series are planned as well, though I do not expect them to be quite as long as this one, and therefore they should not take as long to build (though this chapter ended up being bigger than originally planned, so who knows what will happen?).

Comments, questions and even criticisms are welcome, either here or on the module's Vault page.

I applaud your undying love for nwn, typing 21500 words, whoosh, now that's a lot o work!

Whether I'd read that much dialogue, well that's another story...

Sorry I'm not an "RP" fan, indeed I like the "adventure" more than the RP side of the game...

Not that dialogue doesn't have it's place, definitely it does..

It's just that I don't want to "read" the game, I want to play it...

No slight towards you or your module mate, glad to see builders are still out there plugging away for this game!

Thanks for the encouragement, Guile. No single module is going to fit everyone's tastes, so no worries if this does not fit yours (especially as I see you are building stuff yourself, and I know how that cuts into one's playing time). However, while there is a fair amount of dialogue in my latest chapter, it has plenty of action as well.

This is going to make me dust off the old NWN discs and install the game again, RK333. Thanks! I've been waiting for a reason to come back. This and the final installment of the Prophet series should keep me busy for awhile.

A question, does this end the Swordflight story or do you have a 3rd chapter in mind?

Additional chapters of Swordflight are planned. My current plan calls for a series of 5 chapters in total (i.e., three more beyond the two already released) to complete the story: see above about this being a somewhat crazy project to take on. It may ultimately turn out to have more or less than that, depending on how big I make the subsequent modules, how many not strictly necessary sidequests are included, etc. I do not expect any of the subsequent chapters to be as large as the one just released, so there is some reason to hope I can get them out more quickly.

I have been trying to plan things so that even while advancing a larger storyline there will also be a major quest specific to each chapter, so that at least a significant percentage of the material within any given module can be brought to some sort of conclusion even if it is played as a stand-alone adventure. I am not certain how well that will work out, though.
