Henchman Army?
« on: July 27, 2011, 07:37:22 pm »

Anyone know of a mod or a way to get rid of the bleeding Henchman limit? I'd rather have a small army of them fighting for me than having to keep switching every time I want to advance their storylines or having to give up my healer so I can unlock door and chests.

The quick answer is: there is no way without rewriting the module, not for the furnished henchmen anyway.

You could try out Oldmansbeard henchman utility and create your own army of whatever classes you want.

But, TBH, why would you want to?  The OC is balanced for a single henchman so a bigger party would make the combat rather silly and without any challenge at all.  Whether implementing OHS will affect XP the same as standard party count does I have no clue but if it does, expect to have a very difficult time leveling up with the XP drain of several other allies.

Fighters bash doors and chests.  Rogues open them,  Casters open them with spells or blow them up.  Keep your healer and just bash the obstacles or take enough rogue skills to do it yourself.

Even if you could wander the first 3 chapters with a crowd of followers, you would be left with only one for chapter 4 so may as well learn to cope with the adventure the way the designers intended. No?

HotU will provide an additional henchman to build your party to 3 but if you want the feel of BG or Ultima there is community content written that provides that sort of interaction (Actually, I played one NWN version of Ultima a while ago but I found the large party to be annoying after a while, spending all my time trying to keep them alive rather than attacking the way I wanted. )  To each, his own, I suppose.

My few experiences with modules that provided larger parties was not good.  There appears to be a basic problem identifying all the members of a party and moving them through transition areas properly so you are often backtracking in an attempt to keep gathering up your stragglers.  There may a have been some better scripting written to remedy this problem but I have not played them.

My advice is to deal with the constraints of the module itself and devise methods for succeeding in many different situations.  Your NWN experience will be more fun, you will solve dilemmas using resourcefulness and become a better partner when partied on a challenging PW.

Otherwise play a druid or ranger, you would not have a army of henchmen but lots of "companions": (assuming you're in the OC)  1. henchman, 2. summoned creature, 3. animal companion, 4. dominated animal.

I hate when people ask the cliched "Why would you want to?" question when it comes to game modding and requests.  They simply want to, that's all.  Its their game, and its how they want to play.  After years of playing this game I would love to do the same, actually.  I am at a point where I have played the game so many times I don't care about "balance" any longer. I just want to barrel through and kick backside.

I have been looking at Huntsman's "Guide to making HotU/SoU henchmen" which can be found at the vault.  If you do a search for it, look in the scripts section.  It tells you how to make your own henchmen as well as how to increase the henchmen limit for the two expansion packs.  I can't really make heads or tails out of it yet, but hopefully I will get there.
