Starting OC with high lvl char
« on: March 02, 2011, 10:48:58 pm »

               Hey guys,

a few years ago I lvld a human fighter/weapon master to 40. After being bored with NWN (i know, it's blasphemy) for a while, I wanted to do the OC again but not with a fresh character. Upon choosing a premade char in the screen, I found myself able to select my lvl 40 to start the Prelude ''

This week I re-installed NWN to get the feel for the game again, and wanted to create a lvl 15 in HotU, save him, and then select him to waltz through the OC... but when I selected the good man in the premade charlist, he came up as a simple lvl 1 character ':crying:'

How can this happen? Does a high lvl char need to finish the game in either SoU or HotU to retain his lvl when choosing him for a new game or was it because of a mod I was able to do this?

Not sure what this has to do with the OC specifically, but each time you save the same name, it just increments the PC.  But it retains all the previous versions unless you delete them or have some utility running to "auto-remove" all the priors.  Make sure to choose the highest number at game start, if you want the highest version. (also, assure the Show Pre-generated Chars box is checked).

You can start any campaign or any custom module and use the console to level and then save any PC without saving the game.

I'm not exactly following what your goal is, but rather than waste time with the Prelude, why not just start from Chapter 1?  It's not as if you will be missing anything significant in the story.

Woops, I meant to say Chapter 1 instead of Prelude, it's just standard for me to click Prelude to start instead of Chapter 1 thanks to the countless amount of new chars I've made over the years '<img'>

Using the console feals like cheating to me (as if doing Ch1 with a lvl 40 isnt... shut up, Nasch), so I won't use that '<img'>

The reason why I dont have any old chars anymore is because i forgot to transfer my save files to my new computer 2 years ago '<img'>

Which makes me wonder: create new char in HotU, play HotU, become lvl 40, save char, select that char for Ch1, play as lvl 40 in ch1. Would it work? And also, would I be able to select that char for SoU as well?

Well, if you really want to get back through the OC again with a higl lvl PC this can be someway challenging since you will find much more enemies but really few XPs. Man, I have to tell you, this could be boring! You can try this one time if you like but I'd rather get through new modules instead.

Give it one try, why not? The OC can give you some challenge but getting through SoU or HotU would be TOO easy.

My brother had just the OC and not any expansion so he reloaded his PC and got through again, you can find very good boons, powerful magical weapons and so on but if I think of all those chests to burst...

This is extremely true... I find myself in a very difficult situation now in chasing Heurodis, after putting the 3 wind spheres in the ark and going up to an area filled (I mean FILLED!!!) with skeletal mindblastpuppies... me and Deekin can hold off 1 wave of 12 of those creatures while using loads of pots 'n healerkits, but that's all I can do. They keep swarming me 'til I'm out of those and I die.

Meh.

THe best defense is an excellent offense!  If you are getting hit, you need to invest in more AC gear (more enchantment and/or make sure all your defence slots are filled).  If you cannot hit them, which seems to also be the case, you need to invest in more strength for AB and also adds to damage (making each hit better).  This means you need +strength gear (+12 is max) and highest enchantment weapon you can find.  Mindblast...  if you are getting stunned?  its been some time, but Protection from Alignment should help, no?  Or is it immune to mind stuff!  LOL  All the technical stuff I just did over the years but cant recall exactly what it was!

If there is a secret to nwn, it is knowing what to upgrade when (if gold is limited) and what is the best items to have.

Hah, I used my character from the Neverwinter Knigts server (Im not sure if its still running, but you start with a level 20 character solely for PVP purposes. You get good armour, and the longer you play the better armor you'll eventually get) Anyway, it was epic starting off OC chapter 1 with a level 20 character. I just ran in and slaughtered everyone >'<img'>
