Golem Machine Problem, Maker's Island
« on: July 22, 2011, 02:10:47 pm »

I just killed the Maker and I'm trying to use the machine, but the spells don't seem to be taking. I put the six golem pieces in the machine with the amult, used the key to open it, and saved when the four pillars started glowing red.

I wanted this configuration:

Greater Spell Mantle
Mordenkainen's Disjunction
Mass Haste
Bigby's Forceful Hand/Chain Lightning

Sadly, Mordenkainen's Disjunction was the only spell that caused a pillar to stop blinking red.  Mass Haste, Chain Lightning and Bigby's Hand hit the pillars but they didn't stop blinking red or show any changes.  Greater Spell Mantle couldn't even target the column! The targetting reticule turned gold over my character but stayed dull over the henchmen and over the columns.

I experimented with other spells, and True Seeing seemed to work; the pillar become surrounded by little circling eyes. Does anyone have any idea why those two spells (True Seeing and Mordenkainen's Disjunction) would work and the others wouldn't? At this point I'd take any golem I could get, but I can only get it up to two pillars.

I'm a 9/12 Rogue/Wizard, and I'm casting all of these, including the ones that worked, from scrolls.

I appreciate anyone who takes the time to answer this.

It's been eons since I played a caster mage in HotU but I seem to remember that the only spells that can used are those that can be cast on another player, like buffs.  Or perhaps even those self-only buffs may work as well, like Greater Stoneskin, for instance.  For example, I know I tried Mestil's Acid Sheath and it wouldn't let me make a damage shield golem.  Dang! *lol*

edit:
Ahhh... I found some of my yellowed, brittle notes, blew off the dust and found this:
Use the Maker's Book from one of bookshelves nearby.
You can use scrolls if you don't have spells memorized.
Target the conduits one-at-a-time, there are four of them.
Only these spells work:
Gtr Spell mantle - gives Spell resistance
Bigby Crushing hand - increase str
Gtr Sanctuary - adds physical protection (not sure what that means '<img'> )
Time Stop - adds some regen
Premonition -  adds DR
Mass haste - hastes golem (but i don't think it gets +4AC IIRC)
True Seeing - gives it True seeing *lol*
Chain Lighting - lightning bolt reciprocal damage when attacked
Mord Disjunction - golem dispels enemy spells when it hits

You will get a summoning amulet that can be used all through the rest of the game, unlimited uses IIRC.

That should help.  Cheers!

Thank you for the response; the spell list helped to clarify things, and I got my golem. If anyone else has a similar problem I want to also make something clear that confused me.

You don't cast the spells ON the pillars, the way you would if they were characters. I kept trying to cast the spell and select the pillar, but that doesn't work. The trick is to walk up to the pillar and select it as if it were a chest or table. It will give you the option to cast any spell you have memorized or own on scrolls.

So: Only use the spells from the list above, and DON'T ACTUALLY CAST THEM. Use the dialogue option.

If anyone is interested I ended up using:

Mord's Disjunction
Greater Spell Mantle
Premonition
Mass Haste

So the Golem ends up being basically an anti-mage meat shield who is able to soak a lot of damage from the premonition, resist a lot of magic from the spell mantle, and quickly pound the magic and life out magic users.

I skipped the lightning attack and the extra strength, so he won't be so good at dealing damage, but my build (Rogue/Wizard) is based on tossing a lot of heavy spells and then following up with longbow sneak attacks. I really just need someone to attract attention so I can get use the sneak.

Anyway, thanks again for the help

Did you happen to try to use a scroll for any choices?  For crafting magic items, you cannot use one item to craft another so I am wondering how that works with the conduits.  I don't think I ever tried that option though it is supposed to work.   Perhaps as long as the scrolls are in inventory the choice will appear?  Can't remember anymore '<img'>

Hip, I checked and the script allows using standard scrolls or spells available via the caster himself. However, it doesn't check for other items that allow the spells to be cast (e.g. casting True Seeing from a Gem of Seeing).

I remember being pleased to discover that at the time I first went through because I wanted to cast Greater Sanctuary on it, which I didn't have at the time except as a scroll.

(Also, since SredniV's PC is only a level 12 wizard, he must have used scrolls for some of the spells he cast.)

To use the Golem machince, first you gather all pieces for a golem(1 head,1 body,2 hands,2 legs). Next you click on the machine and an amulet will appear within the machine, click the machine and get the amulet(or leave it there if you know its stats.) and place all pieces into the machine. Then you see the machine glowing and you only need to click on the corners in order to cast spells on the Golem.

Big hand(lvl 9) gives Str to the Golem, Time stop improves its protection/defences, Mass Haste haste it(useful!), The lvl 9 dispel spell gives the Golem dispel effect each hit, Chain Lightning gives it Lightning effect each hit, Premonintion(Lvl 8) improve its armour. You can read them from a book on one of shelf nearby.

To cast spell into the corners, you must first known the spell (e.g. Time stop require level 9 spell casting ability, so you must at least lvl 17-19), then if you are Wiz, you must learned it and prepared it and ready to cast. If you are Soc, you must learn it during level up and ready to cast at the time building the Golem. A dialogue include option for each suitable spell will pop-up once you met these requirements.

After you made all 4 corners the Golem is ready, pick up the amulet from the machine and wear on, you can use the amulet to summon the Golem to you anytime. To order the Golem is similar to work with henceman or familiar(follow, guard, attack). And I found those Golem items from level 1 of maker island also function to this Golem!

Talk to the Golem and you can cast three additional spell on it, so that it can cast them before battle. But only limited to level four.

Take the Golem with you and exist the dungeon, a group of hostile enemies were waiting you outside... '<img'>

The Golem can be carry into the last battle of Chapter 2, so I recommend the part to be complete before you enter the last battle(so complete other quests first). '<img'>
