Cania - henchmen choice (possible spoilers in questions)
« on: July 25, 2010, 04:05:24 pm »

So I am in Cania, playing a neutral/good male fighter - henchmen Deekin and Valen.  I have now liberated Aribeth and have a choice to make as I can't have 3 henchmen.  I tried letting Deekin go for a while and he turned hostile and I could not take him back so he is back in my team for now.  Valen has been a good fighter but I wonder about Aribeth.  Who will be better for the fights ahead?  Having brought Valen and Deekin to Cania isn't it a rotten move to abandon them here?  Can Aribeth be brought back to life and redeemed?  I see there were romance possibilities with Valen if I was playing female and there is a chance that Valen will turn on me in the final battle - I have lowish charisma so that is a possibility.  What about Valen and Aribeth?  Some guidance would be appreciated.'Posted

That's part of the fun playing through... trying different things out. But I can relate my own experience for what it's worth.

As a male, I like to use Aribeth for the potential romantic aspects. Is she my own True Love?  Who can tell, eh?
As far as effectiveness, I think it's a toss-up between Valen and Aribeth.  One thing to keep in mind, especially if you are getting pinched by the expensive items and upgrades... you can't move Valen's heavy flail into your own inventory for upgrade purposes so would need to buy/find a new one in order to take advantage of his weapon focus, if you have the appropriate weapon proficiency, that is.  Aribeth's longsword CAN be moved, if you like to upgrade it.

Deekin is the main support NPC, IMO.  His buffs and songs are awesome and can really add an advantage.  And he can ID just about every item without any Lore boost.

Honestly, though... I would recommend trying each combination.  Except for the limited funds issue, there are interesting and funny interactions between Deekin and with which ever additional companion is in tow and you don't want to miss that!  And you can switch back and forth until entering the Mimic's Nest.

Enjoy the ride! '<img'>

P.S. Incidentally, I had Deekin go hostile on me one time so that whenever I asked him to wait and then picked him up again he would attack.  It was a pain so I killed him and then resurrected him which seemed to fix the faction bug and he became his normal kissy self. I wasn't able to fix it with either the settodefenderfaction command or the suicide/respawn method.

Thanks Hipmaestro, I think I will also juggle them for a while - quite agree with you about the funds problem, everything is sooooo expensive in Cania and I have tried to upgrade Valen's weapon without success.

This must be a bug, either faction quirk or something else. You are NOT supposed to be able to dispatch/rehire henchmen in the Reaper's Realm although they will transport there if you use one of the dispatch options.  Use the tavern as holding place for your unused party members.  Also, use the "Wait" option rather than the "Go on" option and they will remain where you placed them.

## dm_setfactiondefender  (and then click on Valen when the cursor appears) will restore the friendly status to Valen.  However, as mentioned before, it seems to work better if you just kill Valen and then resurrect him (I know it seems cruel, but it's just a way to reset things as they should be).

He can't injure the Reaper can he? ':?'
