Been a Long Time Since I Played NWN1
« on: June 24, 2016, 06:45:15 pm »

Hi ,everyone, as title says.  So I'm wondering what HAKs I might want.  I know I want PrC.  Apparently, that's still THE class pack to get.

But, are there any graphical improvements?  I remember seeing some nice rolling ground shortly before NWN2 came out.  It was one of the arguments against NWN2.

NWNX sounds familiar.

Here is a recent write-up by me (just updated it), with links to the vault. Many modules employ tilsesets that feature undulating terrain; f.e, The Aielund Saga, Snow Hunt, Darkness Over Daggerford, Sanctum of the Archmage etc. Enjoy.

There's a lot of new artwork in the latest CEP and the Custom Content Challenge, if you can find a module that showcases it.

Shameless self-promotion : my Dark Energy module is very recent, so it has a fair sprinkling of those goodies, if you don't mind mature themes. I'm sure others can suggest much better examples.

A Dance with Rogues is arguably the best story-driven / rogue-like module out there (adult content).

The Hall of Fame may help you to find other great modules.

Wow, that's vast!   Thank you very much.  Is undulating terrain something a player can add as an override or does that have to be baked into the module?

Thing is, it's just a basic write-up written by a scrub of the community. NWN mods are a jungle, and I've only scratched the surface.

I've linked to a few tileset overrides and patch haks that seem to work ok, but there are sometimes compatibility issues because the module wasn't built with them in mind.

It's still a big help.  Thank you very much.  '<img'>

What can you tell me about compatibility?  PrC, Rod of Buffing, and Tonyk AI looks good so far.  Certain things don't work unless the module uses it, right?  So, how will CEP or Project Q work in the Bioware missions?

CEP only works with modules that use it. It doesn't affect the Bioware campaign at all.

I understand the same is true of Project Q (but others may know more).

There are no compatibility issues with installing new module files in the appropriate folders - modules, hak, ambient, localvault, movies, music, portrait, tlk - because each module only uses those files specified by the author.

Replacing an existing file with a different file of the same name might break something. However, the only examples I'm aware of are CEP 1 and CEP2 (use only those versions, taking care not to overwrite them with older ones from the Vault, even if the module says you should).

Using overrides and patches is different. In that case, you are changing content in a manner that the module author did not anticipate. So, there is always a risk of incompatibility. This is not a popular message - package fans often want to howl it down - but that doesn't alter the fact. Having said that, the risk may be very small, especially with mods that only change the appearance of the game.

The risk is higher with scripting and gameplay systems. There are known issues with PRC, Tony K and camera mods, for example. They will work with some modules but not others. One approach is to suck it and see. Then if you have a problem with a module, check whether it still happens when the patch or override is removed before complaining to the module author.

Well, I installed the PrC.  But I need the character creator to make characters for it but that will not run.  Crashes silently.

Character creator runs now.  Just needed Java.  But portraits.2da is nowhere to be found it says so it shuts down at portrait selection.

EDIT:  But portaits.2da is in the 2da zip.

Your default portraits.2da file that Neverwinter Nights is using should be in the 2da.bif file that lives in C:\NeverwinterNights\NWN\data folder. If this file is missing, then I'd recommend a full reinstall. If it's there, then the issue is related to PrC in which case, I have no suggestions.

NWN didn't have a problem creating characters without this file.  Nonetheless, I uninstalled. reinstalled, then verified my installation and the file is still not there.

EDIT:  Correction, the file is there now but the charactor creator is still complaining and crashing.

Did you read the comments on the Character Creator? Some stuff there about the hak installation and the possibility of using Leto instead.

I did now.  I was able to edit two three characters and play them through LETO. Changing domains in LETO didn't produce all the domain feats and some PrC feats went missing.  Editing the race changed the stats properly but none of the racial feats were added.  I have not tried editing classes because I'm not sure what I want o use besides warlock later.

You can try run the module with PRC via NWNCX+nwncx_patch

it will allow you to take custom race and will adjust abilities/feats accordingly - just type the race Label into Subrace field, check racial_types.2da to find out races Labels

it will allow you to take custom base class

it will allow you to take custom domain, spells, feats

Are you using the PRC Character creator (not LETO)?

Just make sure to run as an admin, in compatibility mode and with a clean override folder.
