Vardoc's Hunt for Posterity
« on: November 17, 2015, 09:59:56 pm »

I've decided to jot down the procedure for the quest "Vardoc's Hunt" here (a cult evidence story in ch2 that is very difficult to reach), since it would probably be deleted if I put anything on the NwnWiki.

  1. The first time the PC enters a neutral MQ trigger, Solomon appears nearby and offers a ring.  It doesn't need to be accepted.  It might be used to flag the PC as quester in multiplayer.  Neutral triggers are inside and outside of the tavern in Port Llast.

  2.
  3. Module cools down for 150 rounds (15 irl minutes).  When the player enters a Neutral trigger again after the cooldown, Solomon is spawned again and threatens the PC.  The conversation needs to reach the end (End Dialogue) before he goes away and the plot advances.

  4.
  5. Now, when a hostile MQ trigger is entered, Solomon & Friends attack; they leave a note that can be handed to Aribeth at any time before the "conclusive" evidence (Letter to Vardoc, Relmar's Journal, Charwood Cultist's Journal) is in.  Hostile triggers are on the paths outside the town.

  6.
  7. Now, when the PC enters a neutral MQ trigger, Tarran or Jaheel approaches the PC and manipulatively asks for help.  A 300 round (30 irl minutes) timer for this little quest starts.

  8.
  9. The plot can be advanced by either waiting 30 minutes or heading south, to the standing stones in South Road - Farmland, and slaying Neva.  Letter to Neva can be handed over to Aribeth for more cake.

  10.
  11. Now, when the PC enters a neutral MQ trigger, Benleran approaches, warning about Vardoc and advising the PC to run away.  Module cools down for 50 rounds (5 irl minutes).

  12.
  13. When the player enters a Neutral trigger again after the cooldown, Lerner approaches him with more warnings.  Another 50 round countdown.

  14.
  15. When the PC enters a Neutral trigger again after the cooldown, Thurwin approaches him and says that Vardoc is gonna kill everyone.  Final 50 round countdown.

  16.
  17. After the final cooldown, when the PC enters a hostile MQ trigger outside town, Vardoc spawns right in his face and attacks.  Letter to Vardoc can be handed over to Aribeth as a "conclusive" item of evidence.

You've never taken an hour to do Chapter 2? I doubt that I have ever done it that fast.

Actually, I have never really paid attention to the cooldown timers. But, it's possible that I normally get to the appropriate triggers at least once after they have run. It's worth noting that the countdown usually starts when the NPC is created, not when he finishes talking to the PC. In other words, the 15 minute countdown starts when Solomon is first created inside the Green Griffon Inn, not when he finishes chatting with the PC and trying to give him the ring.

I think the only time I have really broken that plot line is when I used the Recall Stone often (usually, I rarely use it). Between the Stone and not staying on the roads in the outdoor areas, it may be possible to avoid some of the triggers. And, once I ran away from Solomon in the Green Griffon and let him chase me into the barn outside before going invisible and using the Stone to port out. I should probably summarize it.

  • The quest "Solomon" takes 15 minutes to complete, minimum.

  • The "Poor Neva" quest starts immediately after and has a time limit of 30 minutes. But it can be done as fast as you can run.

  • The final stage, "Vardoc's Hunt," starts immediately after that and there are 3 five-minute timers, one after each NPC that warns the player. So like Solomon it takes at least 15 minutes, but it involves a bit more hanging around the inn.

I think mejcell ran this chapter in about 3 minutes. To clear it entirely would take a few hours for sure, but I don't think there's a guarantee that you would hit all the triggers properly even then, hence my stupid guide.
