I have some questions regarding Fighter-Mage hybrid classes...
« on: October 22, 2015, 08:28:08 pm »

I would like to start my first OG-SoU-HoU playthrough. I know what type of character I would like to play - basically a warrior with some minor magic (mostly buffing and passive spell effects).

I already discarded Paladin, Cleric, Druid and Ranger - mostly for RP reasons (Paladin and Cleric) or because I don't know how to play such classes (especially Rangers).

I want either:

Fighter/Wizard (or Fighter/Sorcerer)

Bard

I heard Fighter/mage class multiclass isn't as good as it used to be in previous Bioware games (I heard it was one of most favorite multiclasses in Baldur's Gate). I would like to hear from more experienced player whether it is worth to create such character and if so, how many levels of both classes should I take to be a decent fighter and still have a few good spells to use.

As for Bard, I know they are very powerful (I played 15 level Bard for a ten minutes and he was very tough - Improved Invisibility and Bard song are an adventurer's best friends), I just would to ask whatever it would be better to stick to Bard in higher levels or take levels of Red Dragon Disciple.

I hope someone is still reading this dark corner of Bioware Forum. '<img'> If not, I might get my answer by few experiments with newly created characters in HoU.

For a level 30+ world, taking RDD levels is probably worth it. If you're expecting a cap of level 20ish, though, I'd probably go pure Bard or maybe 16 Bard/4 Fighter.

Fighter/mage multiclass that focuses on self buffs...is called a Cleric : / Since spells basically scale exponentially with spell levels, losing several caster levels for a minor boost to BAB and a few feats really doesn't cut it. You don't have the casting power and you don't have the melee power. You might be able to get away with it a bit more for a level 40 build, but it's still very uncommon because, frankly, it's not very good.

Bard will be your winner, IMO. Since you have already decided Cleric is a no go.

This was my original intention when I was trying to decide how to split up my levels for a build I just posted. Went into it hoping to have a good melee character that took advantage of Bard buffs. But, because you will only reach level 28ish at the end of HoTU it's impossible to get 20 Bard(lasting inspiration) and 10 RDD.

In the end I opted to nix the Bard casting and instead rely on UMD to use scrolls I find, magic items ect...surprisingly there are quite a few in SoU. By the end of it I didn't feel like I was missing out on bard buffs at all. Not sure how abundant the buff items are in HoTU, but I would imagine there are plenty.

The following seem logical to me.

12-14 Bard / 4-6 Fighter / 10 RDD

20-21 Bard / 7-8 Fighter

The OC and SoU both start at level 1, so you are not supposed to take the same character through both. HotU is for the hero from SoU, and the NPCs will recognize SoU's hero and refer the the hero from the OC as another person.

if you want to continue your character from the OC, try the Aribeth's Redemption series. It is a love story between your character and Aribeth, so you need to be male and not evil. After the first bit, there is plenty of action, too. It takes you to about level 28, same as HotU. I have done this with a Bard 6 / Fighter 12 / RDD 10 and a Rogue12 / Monk 8 / Fighter 8, and I'd be happy to post either build, or both.

After HotU, you can play the Sands of Fate series to go all the way to level 40. I have done this with (among others) a Fighter 18 / Bard 7 / RDD 15 (using Bard for access to RDD and for skill dumps, but I could make a more Bard-heavy build for you) and a Rogue 7 / Fighter 8 / WM 25.

You can find lots of builds here: http://home.comcast....wk/buildsearch/

Alright, thank you for your answers. It will be Bard.

I already have an idea about the build I'll use, but I will look at those you posted for inspiration.

Hopefully, it won't end like in DA:O ("Ummm... this character I created five hours ago isn't bad, but... Maybe I would prefer to be Rogue.") '<img'>
